P0422 on 2011 Expedition EL XLT

Hi all,

So I hate dealing with this code since it is very unspecific. I hope you can all point me in the right direction. Maybe something common with this vehicle, or maybe something else based on the symptoms.

So I just started getting the Check Engine Light. I read the codes, and the only thing it shows is P0422 (small EVAP leak). Which could be the gas cap. Since this car doesn't have a gas cap, I thought I would clean around the gasket and stuff. I haven't done that yet, as there is another symptom that I am seeing that could be related, and hopefully can narrow down this code a bit more if it is.

I noticed that the vehicle has to crank a lot more lately to get started. Like the fuel lines aren't maintaining pressure. Is there something that could cause this in conjunction with P0422?

I'd do a fuel pressure check. It's possible your in tank pump is getting weak. I'd also check all the hoses going up to the evap. You might have a dried out failing one. Their not so easy to spot. Has anyone worked on your Suv lately? In particular, around any evap hoses?

I would have been the only person. Where are the evap hoses under the hood with a 5.4 in a 2011?

p0442 i'm guessing. Purge valve(vapor management) may be problem especially if truck starts real hard after fuel fill up. On motor find hose with green capped test port and follow to throttle body. That gizmo #3 between t-body and test port is purge valve. See if you can suck air through it. Is bad if leaks. Usually is accompanied with p0171 and/or p0174.

+1 on the Purge Valve. 2010 Expy and I kept getting the PL0422 small EVAP leak code. I did the WD40 process to the capless fuel flapper, inspected all the lines and hoses and then I'd clear the code. It wouldn't come back on for a week, but eventually it would always come back. Drove me nuts. In the process of elimination I bought a new purge valve and tried that next. Problem solved. I think it took me 7 minutes to install it.

PS: The truck ran fine and there wasn't any hard starting issues.

Interim update.

Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions and assistance. So getting to this thing isn't the most fun thing in the world. But I eventually got it. I had a hard time with the picture orientation above (and couldn't find the green test port), so I looked up a YouTube video for the location of this thing, and once I saw it, of course the picture above made much more sense. LOL. I put a snip from the YouTube video for anyone else that is looking this up in the future.

Anyway, one side of this thing has a vacuum hose and an electrical connector, the other side just has a hose. DO NOT try to pull the hose out of the side that just has a hose. YOU WILL BREAK IT, and then will need to replace it anyway if it is good. Which I did.

I feel like when sucking on this thing that it isn't air tight as Pitdexion eluded to above. It is such a small leak (if it is there) it is hard to tell. Since I broke it I had to order a new one anyway. Let's hope this was the issue, and I didn't just cost myself $100.00 in parts for nothing!

The part should be in within a few hours. I am going to pick it up and we will see if it was the issue.

UPDATE:

SUPER simple to install (literally had it done in 3 minutes). It came with a new bracket that goes into the rubber grommet, but that seemed like a lot of extra work for nothing. I just slid the new one on the existing bracket. I cleared the code, and now we wait.

I noticed that on my old one, the side that just has the hose (not the side with the hose AND the electrical connector), spun. The hose itself didn't spin, but the plastic nipple did. On the new one there is no spin. I assume this may have been a redesign by Ford, or maybe it was the cause of my problems. We shall see!
