Don't buy a ford

I'm guessing this guy works for dodge or GM. He pushes people to go to a different brand at every opportunity.

today the dealer's new estimate $2100 ford still offering $1200 in assistance and told me the offer is only good for 3 days. wtf

Take them to small claims court. The warranty defense is irrelevant. This is a manufacturing defect and one that Ford has been aware of for over a decade. The only way to fix it is to strip it, remove the oxidation, and repaint it.

Do we know what years this affects? What is the newest truck we have seen with the problem? Mine is an 08.

I've been shopping 2009-2012 Expeditions and found the problem on all but one of them (we have looked at or called about over 60 vehicles).

My 2010 tail gate just started to blister near the chrome. How does the paint stick to the new F150 ? Why buy one ?

I've been dealing with this paint issue on my 2008 Expedition since 2009. Ford won't do anything about this. I was thinking of getting a group of us together and showing our trucks to the media since Ford is pushing the aluminum F-150. Every expedition and navigator on the road has this problem.

I also have this problem on my 07. Its bad around the rear window, license plate and chrome trim piece. You can clearly see the aluminum in spots around the window. Its also starting on the underside of my hood too.

Local guy body shop quoted me ~$800 to take off the hatch, strip, repaint and reinstall. Sounds like that's a good price from what I can see.

Make sure you get a lifetime warranty on the paint. If the oxidation remains and is simply painted over, it will peel again.

I have the same problem as all, 2007 with bubbling and chips in hood and hatch. Got a quote of 1800 to do both, with removing all Hw before painting. I'll look for another quote or two, looks like I could get down to 1500 or so. I'll be sending a note to ford also, but I'm skeptical.

We have a 2011 Expedition with 70k miles. It is still under the 5yr corrosion warranty and we have the bubbling paint on the back handle area and barely under the hood. Has there been any updates on what to do? This is so frustrating. Ford should be ashamed.

My hood is only starting under the inside front edge, hope it stays there. I see no signs on the rear hatch. With the 2015 F150 being all aluminum, hope Ford got it right.

Disclosure : First, I used to work at Ford in Engineering. Nothing to do with paint or body.

Second, my daughter's 2012 Expedition has the same paint bubbling problem on the tailgate, so I am not a "happy camper" !

We need to understand that this not a PAINT problem. This a SURFACE PREPARATION problem. Contamination (dirt/oil/grease/moisture) is on the bar aluminum surface before the primer and pint are applied. If it is on the surface before the hem flange is folded, well, we know the result.

Other items are made out of aluminum and are painted and do not oxidize. Why ?

First, different aluminum alloy have better/worse oxidation/corrosion resistance properties. They also have varying other properties.

Second, they have special cleaners and chemical coatings applied before the primer and paint. (Alodine, anodize, etc)

Third, is proper primer. Either zinc-chromate or a "self etching" primer.

As for the F150, they are using a special coating called Alcoa 951 in a patented process.


Last, because stamping and assembling aluminum body panels require special equipment, it is likely that the hood and tailgate of the Expedition were made by a supplier. I don't know who, but their manufacturing process is not the "best in class" ! If they haven't changed that by now, they are not likely going to.

Looks we will have to wait until the Expedition gets am "all aluminum" body, built by Ford like the F150. 2017MY ? 2018MY ?

I appreciate what you're saying. I am told that they are going to strip, clean, prep and paint. If it lasts at least 2 years I'll be happy.

Its a real shame because the rest of the paint generally looks good!

2010 XLT 46k miles. Bad bubbling on tailgate with some exposed aluminum in transition areas, handle where it touches paint, just under the back window, etc.

Barely noticeable bubbling underhood, but its there.

2012 Expedition Paint Peeling/Bubbling

Same issue here.

I have a 2012 Expedition XLT EL. The paint is peeling and bubbling in multiple places on the hood and liftgate. Took to a Ford dealer and they viewed it as a black and white situation - car is outside warranty due to mileage (73,000) and the corrosion warranty requires a complete hole be present through the part in order to be covered.

This is clearly a manufacturing defect and needs to be addressed Ford. I've been a loyal Ford customer for 31 years having purchased 10 new Ford vehicles and 5 of those have been Expeditions. Please address this Ford or I plan to switch to a manufacturer that supports their product and its loyal customers.

A $52,000 vehicle shouldn't have peeling paint after 3 years...regardless of mileage!

Those who won in small claims court seemed to have newer vehicles only around 3-5 years old.

If this happens within a few years on my new 15 mustang I'll certainly take them to small claims court. However, I tend to doubt a problem due to the lack of aluminum. I didn't buy a new Expedition (AL on hood and liftgate) or F150 (all AL body) precisely because I don't trust Fords paint process on aluminum.

I agree that you aren't likely to have much luck with a 15 y/o vehicle, but surprisingly someone did win in court last year with a 10+ year old vehicle. I believe it was announced on that Facebook page. As for the Mustang, it's definitely not as common as with the Expeditions, but I do recall seeing someone with a Mustang complain recently about a similar problem. The worst one, however, is the guy with the 2010 F150 with 3x,*** miles. his truck looks like an '85 F150. :x

I have major bubbling and paint corrosion however I replaced everything and have used AC aluminum tape to cover holes of rust on the roof. I had to pay thousands to repaint the entire vehicle. why waste this much money on my expo you might ask? well its paid off and my monthly payment is ZERO. runs great after a few transmission problems. however I WILL NEVER BUY FORD AGAIN!
