I have had the tailgate repainted while it was under warranty a few years back. It just started bubbling again this summer. The bubbles are growing so fast they are way beyond touching up with a touch up brush. I was going to buy another exped(17 or newer) since I like the truck otherwise, but am reconsidering now.

Covered by warranty, 2016 and beyond.

The 2018 models use a different process for priming and painting than the older ones. Same as the F150 and I have not heard of any complaints about them.

No one can tell you how to spend your money I'm just saying the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence until you jump over it. I have a family member who bought an 2015 Yukon XL Denali new and it just had to have an entire transmission replacement at 50,000 miles, oh and the AC stopped working in it last week...LOL. The aluminum is under warranty now but as you said you could still get them to cover it in previous models if you held their feet to the fire on it. I agree with you any day of the week the aluminum paint peeling is annoying.

My 2007 was bubbling on the rear hatch to the point where it started cracking and chipping off. Had it repainted at a body shop. The guy said it may come back which I don't understand. If you prep it correctly why would it come back. But almost 2 years later and sure enough the bubbling is visible again in the same spot. Hopefully it will take a couple years before the cracks start then I guess I will paint it again. Sucks. Not sure what the permanent solution would be if there is one. I guess it could be worse and bubbling all over.

Add my 2015 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4 to the list of vehicles with bubbling paint.

I purchased the vehicle new and it has never been wrecked or damaged - and is used for only passenger use, no towing or hauling.

Now at 30,*** miles - the paint on the inside seam of the rear hatch is bubbling all along the seam. I maintain the vehicle meticulously, including hand washing, drying and waxing. It is still covered by the basic warranty and I will show it to the service advisor on my next trip. I also bought the Ford extended warranty.

This was my first Ford in over 45 years of driving and vehicle ownership. I am very upset with the problem and have never had the paint bubble like this on any other vehicle I have owned.

After reading most of the threads in this topic, it is apparent that Ford is well aware of the problem and has done NOTHING to prevent it. Add me to the list of unhappy Ford customers who will never consider another Ford vehicle that uses aluminum for body panels.

My 07 Expy started bubbling on the hatch at only 2 years old. We had it at the dealer repeatedly to which they said there was nothing they could do. It was only covered under the corrosion warranty if it rusted through and made a hole. We she is now 10 years old and bubbling all over the back door and under the hood. Maybe someday I will save to money for a reprint.

2011 Expy with the same issue; few bubbles on visible surface and peeling paint on backside. Bought the truck used knowing this was going to eventually happen; features of the Expedition were better than the competitors IMO. Has anyone tired doing a custom wrap on their tailgates to cover it up? If so, pictures would be cool to see. Otherwise, some of those swing out rear bumper tire mounts seen in other posts should cover it up nicely.

On my third Expedition, currently an '11, and all three had/have the paint issues.

There was talk of Ford honoring a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on paint. True? Or am I correct in understanding that Ford will do nothing to fix my '11?

The bubbling paint warranty is now on the 16 and 17 vehicles. You have to take Ford to small claims court. Somewhere in this thread its a company that will loan you the materials to go after them. Several have been successful in doing it.

This is where I think GM does a better job. Their paints have looked great recently

Yes you are correct, they will do nothing. My 08 was under premium extended warranty and they still refused to take care of it.

So I went to the salvage yard, bought a replacement deck lid. Some cancer along the bottom edges and inside the lip, from 2013 Ltd Tuxedo Black.
Replaced it and took off my lid, stripped it of all badges rubber wiring to just metal.
Took it to my local Powder Coating expert last week and now waiting for the finished product.

Media strip inside and out to bare metal . Barrier coat of anti tarnish , powder coat black epoxy primer , bake and followed by Tuxedo Black Metal flake Powder coat, bake and
Clear Coating and now under fine sand , compound and buff. Clear Coat leaves the finish with a slight "orange Peel" effect, fine finish wet sanding and compounding will leave it like factory new.

Pick up is next week, pictures of the whole process to follow.
Since the back lid is only up against the side plastic panels, color match is not 100 % critical so I am curious how well it does match. The hood would be next and matching is more critical since it lays up against the fenders for comparison.

My hope is that this is the final answer instead of repeated repairs by dealer designated body shops and money out of my pocket.

Stay Tuned................

That sounds awesome Fischer. I hope it works out well for you. I can't wait to see the pictures.

Aluminium is great and the industry that has made the best use of it is aviation. Auto manufacturers need to follow stardards that are proven and give the customers what they have over paid for. I recommend the engineers in Wichita drive accross town and ask Cessna why and how they do surface prep before paint is sprayed.

I agree 100%.

It is clear that Ford does not care about the aluminum corrosion issue that has existed on the Expedition models for years. If the company and its employees cared about the problem - it would have been corrected years ago.

While there I hope Cessna remembers to thank Ford for developing the standard....

My 2010 paint is bubbling on the hood by the latch and on the back tailgate and is now starting to peel. Any advice on getting any of this covered? I will soon be down to bare metel when it peels off the next time it gets washed. This is truly a manufacturing / engineering defect to mix metals without proper finishing.

Time for upgrade? Doubt that will be covered. Maybe an auto body shop can do a new paint job on those two
