I have an o3 4x4 and when I am at a stop then put it in reverse, I hear a ping coming from the axle or drive shafts. Anyone have the same sound? Its really a high pitched ping.

I have not heard that in mine. Does it do it when you are in 4 wheel drive, or 2 wheel?

Both. To get an idea of what it sounds like. Just knock two sockets from socket wrenches together and that is very much what it sounds like.

Gotcha, in that case I definately do NOT have that noise, but I have enough others to make up for it :)
Good luck,

jt, Does your expy have Advance track? I have advance trac and when changing direction as you described I have more of which I would describe as a Loud clicking noise.
While at the dealer a month or so ago I had the service manager come out for a listen. He and I spent about 30min. with him and I taking turns going from forward to reverse while listening closely. The noise is definetly more prominate from the rear wheels.
He then go the keys to another '03 and could not reproduce the noise (it did not have advance trac).
While getting my wife explorer serviced a week ago there was another '03 expy there getting serviced that had advance trac. I grabbed the service manager and we went out to test that one a sure enough it makes the same noise!
He's going to check with ford but I'm thinking this may just be a characteristic of the advance trac.

daveplot & tgilbert, what was the build date of your expeditions?
Also, I did not mention that this clicking can only be heard when the windows are down. The noise can also be described as if the calipers are sticking a bit then release as you go from forward to reverse and vise versa. The clicking is more prevalant when backing while the front wheels are turned and the vehicle is off level.
I can reproduce the sound 100% of the time when coming to a stop in front of my home and turning the wheels to back into my driveway which has has a very slight incline.
