Can someone please school me on differentials and gears? Like gear ratios compared to high and low end torque etc. Thanks!

i can really only give you the super basics. the higher the gear ratio, the quicker out the gate. that is why you see a lot of classic cars with 4.10 gears. helps them off the line faster. also, if you have bigger tires, the higher gear ratio helps turn those wheels a little easier to take some stress off of your drivetrain. for example, my truck has 3.55:1 gear ratio. but since i have bigger tires, i need something a little higher. so i need to go with 4.56:1 ratio. the higher you go on your ratio, the higher your rpm's will be. lots of rock crawlers go with gears in the 5.36:1 ratio, or something like that. this is about the extent of my knowledge.

heres to add to that. the higher the gear ratio the slower you go. thats a good thing for drag cars off roaders or people with big tires. cough cough. like some people. the lower the gear ratio the faster you go. like some race cars have ratios down to 2.5 i think in some cars. if not lower. cause speed is what theyre after. its also harder for then engine to turn the tires if the ratio is that low. like watch a nascar race. after the pits the pit crew have to help push the car out. cause of the gear ratio. acceleration vs speed pretty much.
