has any one every heard of alloy rims becomeing pourus, and loosing air due to chemical break down between road salt, and alloy, hmmmmm i work with alloy every day and never heard of such a thing, but this is the problem, i have been loosing about 5 lbs of air a week out of one tire, i have broke it down twice reset the bead, and changed valve stem, and continue to loose air, so today i took it to tire shop and they told my my air loss was through the rim, and the rim was no good, thought they were just trying to sell me new rims, but no go, got some comeing in a few months, just thought this was weird, never had alloy rims go bad, other than busting them up off roading

Well anything with chrome or certain aluminum alloys breaks down with the brines and salts in the winter if they're not cleaned periodically. Detroit's built on salt and salt is built on roads. There's news reports on this sort of thing about twice every winter (I personally think that's far too few but, that's all I ever hear or see), one talking about Chrome wheels literally deteriorating under the finish to the point the rim collapsing on an 05 navigator. Different metals and metal alloys react differently to the stuff resulting ionization of the other metals in the alloy to the chlorine (might make the metal porous), or just corrosion. sounds to me like the shop's call on your rim should be legit.

i've heard it's no good to leave chrome rims on in the winter because the salt is damaging to them. it causes the chrome to pit and peel. so i take my chrome whhels off in the winter and use the stock wheels. never experienced any problems. what you're going through is a first for me. but i guess it makes sense. especially if you've went ahead with all your other troubleshooting!

On one of my father's Grand Cherokee's there was one wheel that always lost air. I had the tire taken off and sprayed the inside of the wheel with Duplicolor bedliner paint. That seemed to do the trick.

One of the rims on our old 99 Town and Country van did that. The lip deteriorated causing it to lose air out through the metal. You could watch it bubble on the metal. Traded it before fixing.
It is not that the metal "becomes" porous, aluminum IS porous. The problem is the outer "skin" breaks down and allows air to seep through. Some alloys are better than others but all cast metal has some, mostly microscopic, porosity.
