I have 22" chrome wheels and am kinda looking for something of a new look. I love the look now but I would love even mroe to try black wheels. So I figured why not keep mine and just powder coat them black? Cost a lot less not to mention I have 4 tires in like new condition. Plus I think I wanna go with the all black look. As it is there are only two colors on the truck at all, Black and Chrome. No red tails, no blue ovals, no orange corners, just black and chrome.

Anyone powder coat anything before? How does it hold up/ look??

Mr rims are powder coated grey (bought them that way) i've driven in everything snow, sand, mud (caked in rims), and rain with the wheels shining like the paint. Brake dust wipes off really easy too. Im wanting to go all white paint and powder coat them white to match. Id say do it! And go to a shop to see examples of there work first.

P.s. Make sure you keep your tire shine on hand so your tires dont look ashy lol!

Powder coating wheels for motorcycles is kind of a normal thing. I have not personally done it but I have seen it and it looks good. One of the nice options is you can get it done black with small metal flakes in there also that are really only visible when direct sunglight hits it. It would still give a clean black look from a distance but if you or someone were close to it and the sun was right it looks really cool when the light hits with that option. It is way easier to clean them as well once they have been powder coated.

I've also seen Chrome wheels where they did whats called a black chrome finish with the powder coat, I think it looks bad ass as well, just another option for you.

That was my next question... How much $$$? One guy quoted me $500 for all 4 wheels. I would like to keep it under $500 so maybe ill skip on the metallic

I had my stock rims powder coated on my Escape. I had them powder coated grey to match the plastic body cladding. I had a powdercoater do the work for me and costed me $250 for all four. They hold up great and are easy to clean. If the powdercoater knows what he is doing, it should hold up to everything by curb checks.

Went to a local guy the other day and got a quote. Said $100 per wheel but here were the catches... Would only take the wheel with out the tire and had no way to take the tire off.. Would only powdercoat over the existing chrome and not remove the chrome first.. and didnt even offer to paint the plastic center cap!!!
Is this normal?? According to you guys, that price seems a little high and I would still be left with a lot of work to do myself!

Find a different powdercoater. Chrome will not be a good surface for the media to cling to. You might be better off trading or selling your chrome rims and buying polished wheels since there won't be any chrome to get rid off.

No you aren't. Metallic powdercoats are no more expensive than regular powder. I think I know, as I own a powdercoating shop.

100 per wheel, with the tires removed is a reasonable price, and yes, thats leaving the chrome on them. I won't coat chrome wheels, as there is no guarantee the chrome isn't going to peel in the oven. If they are factory wheels, they will probably be alright though.

I've been wanting to do this to my 22's since the chrome is pitting, but it is pricey. I wouldnt mind paying around $30 with me unmounting/mounting the tires, but I would definately want them to sandblast the chrome first.
