Probably asked a million times, anyone do a true dual setup for Expos?

I know my 03 has IRS and that creates issues but the 99-04 Cobras had IRS and there are all sorts of true dual systems so I don't see why not with the Expo too. Any companies out there make them as well as a true dual H/X pipe? Any header option besides a few brands of shorties I've seen doing searches?

I suppose I could get a good local exhaust shop to fab up something but it would be so much nicer to just bolt on a kit and go.

do you like your spare tire? if not then go ahead and do it. if you do then you cant. or just leave the spare in the garage. youll never need it... until you run over a nail or squirrel. haha but really there is no way to do it unless you want to remove the spare tire or dump it before the rear tire.

We did true duals on our 04 Expy but shop had to use 2.25" pipe after the muffler for clearance sake. It can be done but its a pain in the ass. My shop said that I would have gotten the same benefit with one 3" pipe versus duals. But I will admit, it is nice being different than most of the other Expys out there. Here are our pics:

but he has a 2nd gen. cant do that to it. unless you do what mr blown did. but he HAS to be different. lightning super charger, dual exhaust, kicker classic, whats next? :rotflmao: but really on that guy from the old forum. hes in hawaii, EVERYONE has a loud exhuast like that. and EVERYONE runs magnaflow there. and EVERYONE has huge tips coming out at 45, some are 90 or straight out, but most are 45. haha

I plan to do true duals once I've got the money to do it, but hell... I've got plans to do lots of things to my truck when I've got the money.

I do like the sound of the true duals with the magnaflows, they sound a lot cleaner than the flowmasters.

Mine is loud at start up but once you go past 2K rpm you can't even hear it

03's can do it...04-06's cant unless we drop the spare...i wish i could and i would turn them out behind the wheels...but i'm planning on buying a body kit that will require the exhaust to go straight back

Why is 03 the only 2nd gen that can do it? I mean I was looking under there today and it looked like plenty of room to get a pipe through the same spot on the left as the stock one comes through on the right.

And I know of a great shop near here that would be able to do it provided it is possible and not something that would require a ton of modding.

I also hate having dual turnouts, I just don't like the way it looks. I'd want straight back stainless polished pipes like I have on my Cobra.

edit: Any good longtubes or at least mid length headers for the 03/04 2V motors in this application? Will F-150 headers fit with little/no mods? I'd prefer stainless but aluminized would still be ok as I can get them blasted and ceramic coated inside/out at a local shop. Not cheap but I'd rather do that now than be buying new headers in a few years... been there, done that...

Well Blown proves it wrong but 04-06 was redesigned underneath. The spare tire and suspension was realigned. Every 2nd gen I've seen and the shops I went to say they've only been successful with 03's. I've only seen them on 03's...unless we remove the spare it not enough room

bh. blown expy has an 04 expy. like he said he went to smaller pipe after muffler. thats how he was able to fit it.
blown thanks for the photos. as far the research and info that i have found said no dual without losing spare. but you showed it can be done even though with smaller pipes. but your photo looks like a DI/DO muffler not 2 seperate ones. am i correct?

Removing the spare would not be a huge deal to me if I had to. I carry a plug kit and 12v air pump in the truck anyway and I would rather plug the tire on the truck than use the spare. But since I have an 03 I might not have to I guess... I will not neck down after the muffler either, needs to be 2.5" all the way out.

Anyone possibly able to answer my question on the headers?

I do believe carid had some ceramic gibson headers on there site for like $550 depending on motor .... there's hella headers out there for the 4.6l but not so many for the 5.4l that will fit our application cuz once again there's no room especially on the right side the starter is in the way. Problem with duals is all the a/c crap is in the way on the right and fuel tank in the way on the left and the IRS is the biggest problem. Other that that your good lol.

Still can't see IRS being that huge of a problem since the 99-04 Cobras had it and there are a ton of true dual catbacks for that app...

I suppose I would be good with a Y pipe provided the single pipe is large enough to provide the same flow as a true dual. Probably 3.5" from the Y all the way out would do it. I'll keep hunting around for headers... still gotta take care of all the little stupid things on this since I just got it last week. U joints are next as I continue to hunt down a driveline noise between 20-30 mph under light throttle...

I dont know where you live but in Chicago there is a good shop called Iggys Muffler, they do badass custom work, they did the true duals on my dads 97 expedition and in a few weeks they will be installing duals on my 2002 expedition great work and their tips do not rust at all.

Duals are much easier to run on the 1st gen vehicles. Just up over the axle and out. I have a crazy muffler shop near here that I will call up and see how many expos the've done with the IRS, if any.

I did use the DI/DO muffler simply because I didn't want to add a separate X-pipe. Although my muffler guy said a DI/SO muffler with 3" out would do the same thing, I'm just not sure I believe him. Having the DO should eliminate the traffic jam of exhaust.

I'm definitely no exhaust expert though.

wow didn't realize duals was such a big deal. I had custom duals put in with a crossover muffler. Pipes exit out the back. Looks great sounds great and I have an 11 with IRS. Be happy to answer questions that anyone has. The shop I used did not have a problem with the build.
