Damn what a difference superchips makes! and i only had it on 87 octane, firmer shifts at full throttle and still good around town driving! As for gas mileage... meh I think i lost a little but who knows today must have been more humid. Over all I'd say for an 98-02 definitely go with an edge tuner (I used to have one on my 99, though I was too young to drive it I still remember how good it was from the passenger seat lol) but for 03-04 (with what little choice we have) go with the superchips!

On my 98 Explorer, I've had excellent results using the Super Chips Tuner (SCT). Basically bought the tuner used on ebay for $75. Then paid a guy named Doug, at BAMA chips to write three tune files for me. He emailed them to me and I uploaded them to the tuner. It plugs into the OBD II port on the truck, and gives me the options of changing shift points, idle speed, ignition timing maps, and full throttle mixture, also allows rev limiter change, and shift firmness adjustments. I love it, and for towing the pop up camper it made drastic changes.
Anyways, on previous camping trips to key west we always got 11 mpg towing the camper, and had no power above 65 mph. I told doug the problem and he wrote a towing tune file. I uploaded it, and the next trip we had tons of power up to 80 mph, and mileage jumped to 15 mpg. Without towing our mileage went up from 17 mpg- to 20 mpg. It's only a V-6 but with 4:10 posi gears and 182K miles it's starting to lose mpg's.

my old average gas mileage was about 12.5 on this really good 8 mile run with every condition from 50 to 25 and about 4 stop signs and 3 traffic lights. Now I'm averaging, almost all cruise control on both runs, 16.7-17.2 mpg on the 91 octane tuning (I'm running 94 octane).
also I was able to do 3 really great burn outs, one of which was on accident at a light, hehe whoops.
I'll get my highway mileage when ever I can, hoping for at least 19 (old average was 16.2.. Might have a few bad plugs and about 650 extra lbs though)

wow i see mpg in the teens and higher.... i'm averaging 9.7.... yes 9.7 and that's driving in town and highway... but turning a 37 what can you expect.... I'm thinking about going with edge.... but does anyone know of a programmer that adjusts for tire size? or gears planning on running 4.88 when I get some cash saved along with a whole list of other mods still to come.... damn trucks are never done...

I just installed the 91 performance tune from the superchips cortex on mine. I adjusted my speedometer for the 35's as well and it seems to have worked well, it can also adjust for gears too.
With my right foot and the tires I have I dont think I'll get any mileage increases though.
Initial impressions have me thinking the truck overall is just a bit snappier all around. The shifts are just a bit firmer and the engine revs just a touch longer before shifting when I'm on it. Overall I'm happy with the cortex tuner. Dont buy it expecting the world, it's not a 5 minute bolt on supercharger. With the few mods I have I'm really happy with the tuner.

I recommend calling Troyer Performance. They will hook you up with custom tuning per your specs, adjusted for tire size, etc. You will wake up the truck significantly and increase mileage. I'm averaging 15.5 mpg daily driver with 33's. They specialize in Ford, and work with SCT.

The only problem with Troyer is the wait. Granted, if you don't mind waiting a couple months...

I do believe Hypretech allows for aftermarket gears and tires sizes!?!

Not sure about the hypertech but my superchips will do tire and gear changes.

I have been running a Edge Evolution programmer on my 98 for about a month now and I friggin love this thing. The shifts are snappy (you can make them even firmer if you want) and I've picked up 2 -3 mpg. It allows for the tire and gear changes, but not on mine since I have the mechanical odo. By tweaking the custom settings you can change timing, WOT shifting and about a half dozen other perimeters. It came with a custom pod to mount it and I really like having the 4 extra gauge displays. The only downside is that it ain't the cheapest programmer on the block. ($359)
I have a Hypertech tuner for mine and it works great. Tuned for 87 octane, calibrated the speedo, raised the speed limiter to 128mph, raised shift pressure, raised my WOT shift points and cooked a pizza. Not bad.

the only two things that i wish the superchip had is the custom mapping option for air to fuel or at least an air to fuel read out, and cooling fan on of options but yeah it really has to be one of the best for the money especially for the towing!
SCT is NOT superchips!!!!!!!!!! it is a complete different company, the SCT xcal3 or livewire is the best tuner there is for a ford they can be custom tuned by whatever shop you choose and if you do any mods let the shop you bought it from know and they will send you new tunes that you load into the tuner through your cpu. an edge,diablosport,hypertech,superchips or whatever other tuner you use can not be custom tuned and cannot change the transmission stratagies like the SCT can
