2015 EL Limited 57k miles... passenger side running board bit the dust today. I was at work when the wife sent me a video of it making a really bad grinding/binding noise and it was real slow to deploy. My paw in-law tried to lube it up the best he could but it didn’t help. I told her to just go in the settings and leave them out. She’s short and needs them to get in and out, and so do my 2 kids in carpool. I’m guessing it’s the motor that died? Just tried it and it won’t even go up anymore. It tries but just stops.

Think it’ll be alright to run them deployed for a while? I’m not gonna be able to get it to the dealer till after Christmas.

The wife swung by the dealer to let them check it out. Service guy said he thinks their might be a TSB on it? Either way I have to bring it in, let them diagnose it and order parts and then bring it back in when the parts come in. And for some reason the car won't let them stay out? I have it set in the menu for them to stay out and she says they keep trying to go up...well the drivers side goes up and the passenger side just makes the noise and stays out.

A TSB still leaves you holding the bill unless the vehicle is under warranty. Also, last time I had one of these repaired (under warranty) the dealerships weren't replacing just the motor. They were replacing the entire assembly for ~$2K per side. You can pick up a used motor or a Dorman replacement for a few hundred. You can get a generic Chinese motor on eBay for less than $100.

The RBs should stay out if they are set to stay out. If they're attempting to go back up, I would question whether they are set properly in the menu. In any case, I wouldn't leave them out. They hang low and could easily get caught up. When mine gave out post-warranty I helped the malfunctioning board into the closed position when it was attempting to go up. Then I disconnected the malfunctioning RB at the connector located under the RB. In order to keep the connector dry, I bagged it up in a couple Ziplocs and rubber-banded the bags.

We have the extended warranty so that should take care of it.

You are making an assumption about this, right up until your Warranty claims person tells you it's covered. Just make the call so "should take care of it", changes to either "yea, it's covered" or "darn, they won't cover it".....at least by then you will no longer be hoping and guessing.

Manup posted his experience I'm sure in part, so others would not go on some well-founded assumption that it was going to be cost free!

On my 2015, even if you have the boards set to “out” in the menu, they will automatically retract once you exceed 5mph. This is a designed protection mechanism. If you want them to stay deployed you have to unplug them...but in my opinion that’s a fast way to scraping one off next time you hit road debris or park next to a curb. They hang really low in the deployed position.

That’s kinda what I figured was going on. I’ve moved it around the yard with them out but never tied to drive around with them out. Unfortunately the kids need to get out on that side of the car at school and my little one can’t get in or out with out the boards down. So far she hasn’t managed to destroy it yet running with that one out. Appointment is set for the day after Christmas so I’ll know something then.

So a little update on my running board situation. They are going to replace the entire running board at a cost of $1900. My extended warranty is gonna cover it so it’s only gonna cost me a hundred bucks. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long to come in, the noise it makes is really loud and it does it every time you stop and start again, doesn’t matter if you open the door or not.

Here’s the breakdown of the cost to change one running board assembly. I still don’t know why they wanted to change the whole board and not just the motor, but I have a feeling they wanted to make more money off of it being that I have the extended warranty and it only cost me $100 bucks.

I had both of mine changed under warranty between Fall 2015 and January 2016. The dealership replaced the entire assembly just like yours. The one replaced in Fall 2015 started giving me problems Winter 2017 and finally seized up completely a couple months later (despite being babied for 2 years). I was about 1 month outside of Ford's 2 year part warranty so I was SOL on another replacement. Ultimately, I disconnected that one at the board and bagged up the connector. Eventually I'll replace the motor (maybe with one of those cheapo eBay motors), but I really just need one side for the senior dogs to get in/out without injury. When the driver side was working I would always unconsciously step over it as I'm 6' 1" and can easily get in/out of the truck without it.

Replacing the whole board when all you need is a motor is really taking advantage of the customer. Imagine if you needed both sides done, it would cost over $4700. How can they sleep at night?

Mine was over $5K + tax for replacement of both assemblies. Like the other poster it was covered by my extended warranty.

Absolutely PATHETIC!!

This is pricing stuff based on the ridiculous overpricing of the sale price of the vehicle and what the market will bear.

It is CRIMINAL!!!

No way it's worth over 400-500 a side for everything.

Sad world we live in sometimes.

Not really, makes sense if you have any service experience. They are also looking at labor swap time and costs if the replacement part does not work. Makes sense to me to swap out the entire part causing the complaint. I can tell you our shop labor rate is over 150 bucks an hour. Do you really want someone tinkering with it at that rate?

Your entitled to your opinion. I want to disagree though.

Why should any repair shop be adding the cost upfront to work that may be needed if the part doesn't work. That's crazy! If they do the work correctly there should not be a problem.

There is nothing wrong with the board other than the motor and I don't consider changing the motor tinkering.

Good for your shop making $150 an hour. Sounds excessive to me. How much does the mechanic get $35.

I would do the job myself and pocket the difference and I can afford to pay the $4700.

How can you expect a working man to pay that amount of money?
