Hi Everyone,

I own a 2019 Ford Expedition XLT equipped with the halogen tail lights, and I'm interested in upgrading to the led light, my question is will it wok fine without adding adapter?
looking forward to see you experience if anyone upgraded.
The one I have like in the first Picture.

If I were here, you would know it !
Well, if you are replacing the entire assembly, it may have the resistor built-in to stop the hyper flash, if that is what you are concerned about....but just check the specs or ask the mfgr before making a purchase because a lot of aftermarket assemblies do NOT include the bulbs....

HOWEVER, you may be able to replace just the Halo bulbs with LED's that have the resistor built-in too, unless there is something in particular you like or need about the new assembly over the original one....

I know it was like that for the older models such as my '011 EL, which was as simple as removing the old-school bulbs and connecting & installing the LED's with the built-in resistors.. an 10 min process total, for both sides :D

I intend to replace the whole assembly, but I really appreciate your insight! My main concern was whether it would function properly if I switched to the LED version. I love the look of the new assembly and want the full upgrade. Sounds like you had an easy time with your ‘011 EL—hopefully, mine goes just as smoothly. Thanks again for the helpful advice!

Uh what? I have a 2019 plati with the LED tailights and when one of them started experiencing moisture penetration at about 7500 miles, got one replaced under warranty. It was over $1K. I mean I guess more power to you if you're good with dropping that kind of coin to change two taillights. My guess is there may be some aftermarket chinese replicas on ebay, but whoa.

My only caution is the voltage difference may involve some sort of voltage setting some place up front. Given these rigs are pretty advanced based on voltage monitoring. My 19 platinum warned me about a turn signal fault on my LED boat trailer. Only way it could trip a notification is sensing a voltage variation. I would expect the Ex to throw a hissy fit with aftermarket knock off taillights with totally different voltage ie light technology.

My trailer 2023 the turn light led a crimp on the wire wasn’t great and seemed to be looser than ideal. Quick snug and the warning hasn’t resurfaced.

That's why the resistors are needed for some models, so the "hyper-flash" & dash warnings do not happen, but OTOH, they won't fix loose or insufficient connections :D

Technically, you need to use FORSCAN to tell the BCM that you have switched from a halogen setup to LED. The is simpler AND safer than using the resistors, especially for the price of FORSCAN vs. the cost of buying resistors. This process applies for adding LED bulbs to the halogen rear assemblies as well as front assembly.

1. To swap out to the OEM LED assemblies is quite expensive. Roughly $1K a pop.
2. An adaptor harness is required to make these work. The halogen harness is different than the LED version.
3. Have not seen any aftermarket options for our trucks and have even inquired with several manufacturers (DEPO, Morimoto, etc.) to which they've replied they have no current interest in our cars. I'm curious as to what you have found.

FYI, the LED tail light assemblies still have stupidly sucky reverse lights, just like the F-150s. Fortunately, they're replaceable bulbs. I swapped my reverse bulbs out for some high-output LED bulbs shortly after I bought it.

I agree… though my LED sequential flashing Anzo’s had a built in resistor I had a few issues.

First, was the condensation issue. Np, Anzo covered me. Then was the “always on” condition. One side was lit up like I was pressing the brake all the time. No worries… Anzo sends replacements.

Last straw was when my fuse for the tail lights started blowing. For the life of me no issue could be discovered. But, a new fuse wouldn’t last longer than 5-10min.

Had to drop off at the dealer for a service… figured I’d let them take a look. Told me they resolved the issue. GREAT!!! At which point I’m wondering what’s the charge. Service rep told me, “…no charge…”. Huh?!?!

There’s only one thing I know to do that warrants no fee… yup, they replaced the fuse with a higher amperage one.

Snatched that fuse, and those Anzo’s off my truck as fast as I could. NEVER had an issue with OEM tail lights. Only replaced them because I thought the Anzo’s were cool. What’s cooler is not trying to troubleshoot an electrical issue, or not being stopped by police and asked, “do you know why I pulled you over”.

Do you have the brand/number of the new bulbs?

the LED tail light on my 2019 that I replaced had no separately replacable bulb, it was entirely a sealed assembly.

ok, i just checked the wiring diagram for my 2019... the Expedition in 2019 (and probably 2018-2021(?) has separate wiring diagrams for LED and halogen tail lights. the LED has an additional wire on each side, and the BCM likely requires different program coding.

Yes, the LED tail lights on the Expeditions are I think part of the package(s) that has the LED headlights. The ones on my 2015 F-150 Platinum that had LED all around were unibody designs with a circuit board hot-welded into the tail light housing and couldn't be replaced.
