I was in the process of installing a sub, amp, and new head unit. Already replaced door speakers. Luckily I noticed an issue before I really got started. There are 2 wire harnesses plugged in to the factory head unit. One is the basic port for your radio and the other is for the amp that powers the door speakers through the stock radio. I don't want to bypass the amp, I want to integrate it into the new head unit. I know it's possible but I can't seem to find anything online to give me information on it. I don't know if I'd be ordering the right part or how to install it. I'm sure it comes with instructions, but I like to prepare so I don't come across any surprises... like this one. Any help or suggestions?

I would bypass the amp/replace the amp. The factory amp, even in a "premium" sound system is worse than any inexpensive after market part.

Use a harness for your deck, but if you really want to do all of it right, you will replace every stock part except the door wires. You can re run those too if you feel like pulling up some parts to get at the speaker wires.

Whats your exact year/model?

Your stock audio system is that, a system. Its not pieces. You cant treat it that way. Once you remove the deck, all factory parts are moot, that's not an amplifier, its a part of that heads amp system...***

I have the premium in my 98 and I think they are the same. It would be like trying to use the 6 disc changer with another deck - not going to happen/not worth doing.

Get a wiring harness for the car, and then you will be deck to speakers. Run new lines for sub. If you want an amp, you can re use some of the wires to use the space where the amp IS, but you are better off without that factory piece.

I installed a newer 6 disc in dash unit to replace the ancient tape deck in my 98 with premium sound. I used the Ford amp by pass harness. The new unit didn't need an amp and trying to run through the stock amp would cause problems.

I used the stock amp in my 97 xlt w/prem sound. only had a problem if I tried to get too loud on the music and even then at loud volumes it did okay. You shouldn't hurt anything if you hook up to the amp but YMMV. I had my aftermarket radio for near two years that way and I wasn't easy on it.

Thanks guys. I tried several times to reply on here but it kept giving me an error message. Anyway... What I ended up doing is taking the advice on not using the factory amp ignoring the amp harness all together and wired everything else up as normal. Everything works and sounds great.

I do have one question though. I installed a double din that involved cutting away part of my interior dash, which is no big deal to me and went much smoother than I expected (yes!), but once that radio is clipped in there, is there any way to get it back out? The factory radio uses the tools. I don't intend on changing it, but for future reference... Adding rear view cam, etc.
