2013 XLT With basic radio/CD/XM My radio keeps reverting to single play and audio is playing from rear speakers only ans sounds muffled. If I go into menu and select dual play, the audio then plays fine in the front and rear. It just started doing this and seems to revert to single play . The op manual is not very informative of why and how.

Time to replace it. You'll have the option of replacing with another used factory unit (cheapest route) or go aftermarket. Aftermarket allows you to gain more utility and features such as android auto, apple carplay, bluetooth, better sound, back up camera, etc.

If you decide to go factory replacement, check out amazon and ebay for used units. They typically go for cheap due to people replacing them with aftermarket units.

If you decide to go aftermarket, check out crutchfield.com. You can put in your vehicle specs and it'll tell you exactly what you need along with what options will work for your specific vehicle. If you want to pay a little extra, crutchfield will make a harness that makes it 99% plug and play from factory harness to the headunit harness. Only thing you'll probably have to physically wire is the grounding wire and reverse wire.

I am in no hurry to replace the radio, rather to fix this small problem.

If you want to fix it, you'll have to take it apart to find the contact that is causing the issue and resolder or clean up the solder, depending on which failure it happening.
