Last weekend, a couple hours after having my tires changed, I was driving down the highway. I go to pass a car. Shortly after passing him, and as the speed was "winding down" I notice a strange sound.

Finally was able to locate it. Seems to be coming from the vicinity of the passenger side rear tire. It seems to come on from around 30 mph, and all the way up. It's only there when I have the foot on the gas. When I take it off, the sound more or less stops.

Here's some video from the third row area. This was turning on to a road, and going up to around 50 mph (there was a power truck in front of me.)

Any ideas? TIA.

The whirring sound. In the beginning, tire howl seems to also be there, but it goes away, and just the whirring that's left behind, that's the sound I'm worried about. You can hear it by itself around second 24. Towards the end, that's just me passing over a section of bad road.

I have some other videos, but they upload slowly with this dial up :(

I was going to change out the tire with the spare, just to make sure it isn't the tire, but the Expy won't start. (That's another thread...*sigh*)

You sure thats not the wheel bearing? If not maybe they were stupid and didn't tighten the lugs properly or some crap. You said it happened right after you had the tires changed?

lol, seems like your full of luck with it right now.

Well, put in the spare, and it still makes the sound, so I don't think it's the new tires.

My dad doesn't think it's bearing, but either way, how would I check/change that?

Also checked the differential, and it has fluid (figured I might as well check to make sure.)

As a side note, how close are the pads supposed to be the rear rotors when the parking brake is off, and the tranny is in neutral? The pads seem to be on/touching the rotor.

just a thought...jack the rear end up as long as you are in 4x2 otherwise jack up frt and rear if in 4x4 and put it in drive and accelerate see if you hear the noise still also locate a stetascope (spelling) and listen to both other the rear bearings if one is bad it should make a loud growling noise....good luck

Yea, that's what my dad wanted to do, but we didn't have jack stands, and putting them up on just jack didn't seem very safe. :D

Guess I'll have to buy some tomorrow.

The sound has worsened after driving back up here. Now you can really hear it when I'm slowing down. *whir* *whir* *whir*

Well, here's a video of me spinning it by hand. I think it's coming from inside the tire, so that's where I recorded. It's the slight rubbing sound that I think is the problem. The squeaking sound is me spinning the actual tire.

This is what it sounds like driving by slowly.

Maybe this gives some of you an idea of what it could be. I think I'm just going to go to Greenway Ford, unless someone knows a better place here in Orlando.

TIA

Left it at Ford. They said something is wrong with the differential, and asked for permission to open it up. They'd know by tomorrow. :(

I thought it sounded more from the wheel, but I'll see what they tell me tomorrow.

Yea, if I would have known more or less what was exactly wrong with it, I would have taken it to a specialized shop.

Hopefully this is one those "good" dealerships that doesn't try to steal. :D

There's an old TSB out for the limited slip differential that may have something to do with your noise. My 03 made noise during slow turns when the diff was cold. The dealer repacked the diff with, I think, a different grease for the clutch packs and it went away.

*sigh*

Dealer called back. Apparently, all my differential is rusted out on the inside, or something like that, so they say they have to replace everything, except the housing. 2,500 for everything. Does that seem reasonable?

For 3000, he said he could replace the rear pads and rotors. Apparently, the rotors are "below spec." As far as I know, they are Ford rotors. LOL

I'm calling around to see what prices I can get.

I'd say thats ****** expensive!

shit I can get ford to rip my powerstroke out and install headstuds for that.

If I were you buy a performance dif (if the diff is screwed) and bring it to a shop somewhere. Ussually transmission shops have guys that know difs well. Most regular shops can take care of that too. I don't think performance difs are more than a grand anyways.

For 3 grand tell him you want to go to dinner and a movie before he rapes you! lol

And the drama continues...

Called another place (some place in Clearwater that specializes in differentials) and they quoted me 1400 to replace a 8.8 differential, worst case (if everything had to be replaced, 1600 for a 9.75.

Dad told me to just tell the dealership to put everything back on, and to just take it back home.

Dealership calls back, I tell him what the other shop quoted me, and he goes "Oh, you want to replace the whole thing?" I asked if that would be more expensive. He said no, and he would check on the price of that.

He calls back, and tells me they don't make that assembly any more. Also tells me it would be $1500 (apparently, 500 for taking it apart, 1000 for putting it back on) for just putting everything back the way it was. That is not including the tie rod they snapped because "it was that rusted." Grr...

So the end price (and that's with a discount) would be 2497.82. Yay :(

... So your saying their bill was 2500 without fixing or replacing anything? I do know putting those things are tricky, but not 1000 dollars. And it also is pretty exposed just by taking the cover off depending on what was rusted. Kinda sounds like a ******** story. If your going to pay it before you tell them to put it back together show up randomly and say you want to see the differential out before they put it back together and you pay. They may just be trying to screw you.
