Hello all,
I'm new in this form... I got the 18 expedition about 6 months ago and I'm loving it, this weekend I was out with the family in a short trip, came back last night put my kids to sleep after about an hour I came back to find my rear glass is broken, I check the cameras and this is what I see... As you can see nothing but the window it just suddenly pops...

I would take the video to Ford. Good case for warranty replacement. Glass might have had a flaw, or possibly even the wrong support struts.

I've seen this complaints online but only on older model Ford, nothing on the past 2-3 year models

Yeah that’s weird. If it wasn’t for the camera I’d automatically assume a break in. I use the glass opening feature a fair amount, I’d wet my pants if it shattered while opening or closing it.

That didn’t just break, it went out with some force. I would bet it was a defective glass piece or installation in some way causing the glass to be under a large amount of stress. That doesn’t help you, of course (nor any of us if it’s a model-wide issue), just an observation.

Wow!!!

Check the underneath of the rear spoiler/stoplight. Looks like it took a bang from the gas struts as the glass stopped holding them in position. In fact I'd be examining the entire rear for scratches and dents with a magnifying glass and putting a claim in for a complete respray of the lift-gate if I found anything amiss

The liftgate glass is hinged, so it won't explode on its own. My bet is on the pneumatic struts.

I think Paddler may be on to something here. The way that back glass rests on the gasket around the opening, it's not solid in the liftgate.

I did some CSI work on the video (enlarged it, ran it at 1080p, and slowed it down to 1/4 speed). It looks to have started on the left side at the bottom. It is feasible the strut exploded outward into the window...perhaps the struts were attempting to open (for some reason) without the latch releasing. That would cause a failure in the strut which could result in one or both of them popping out through the glass.

I have seen this happen in the past on a variety of vehicles. Could it be that the inside temperature of the vehicle was significantly different than the outside of the vehicle?

Unlikely given that the glass isn't confined in a frame. It flips up and just rests on a gasket.

The same thing happened to my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When I researched this I found that it happens with several makes and models. I also read that this happens with sunroofs as well. I never found a good root cause, but mostly speculation of what causes this.

I know its only speculation, but what were the theories? Or do you have links to the threads in question?
