Relocate oil filter on '03 EXPY

Has anyone attempted to relocate the oil filter on a 2003 Expedition?

I've worked on a '99 Navigator and the oil filter use to be easily accessible just below the passenger front bumper, but I guess FORD decided to move the oil filter closer to the engine and into a harder to reach area.

I was thinking of relocating the oil filter to an easily accessible area and though about adding a bypass filter as well.

Amsoil sells a full flow oil filter and bypass filter kit. (www.amsoil.com)

If anyone has done this, which kit did you get and were there any other extra parts you needed.

For those who think this is a bad idea, please let me know why you think it would not be a good idea.

Thanks all!

From what I have seen/read, the only time Ford put in the remote oil filter mount was when the Exby's can with the factory tow package (like mine). I can only assume that this is true with the '03's as well.

In any case, the remotely mounting the oil filter is fairly easy, and you can get the remote mounts from several places. Try
http://www.jcwhitney.com/ to start with.

Ok, the picture on the link you provided shows a SINGLE filter, remote mount system.

Basically, one of the items you see in the pic is the bypass adapter (the flat cast piece), or the device that takes the place of the original oil filter, and diverts the oil via a hose to the other item shown which is the remote oil filter mount (the cast piece with the mounting flange). Once filtered, the oil returns via hose to the bypass adapter.

Not shown, but available is a two filter system, which simply increases the oil flow that can be filtered. I doubt you need this.

Does this fit all Ford V8s? I'd like to have one for both car and the truck.

Is the Purolator filter specced the same at the 820 Motorcraft? The only downside I'd see is having to use another filter.

JayP,
I am almost 100% positive that it would fit (or one from another vendor). I believe that the oil bypass adapters are actually smaller than the filters themselves. The "hard" part is finding where to put the remote oil filter mount...which can't be that hard. In terms of the filter itself, it would not be brand specific, but the model of the filter may be different from the unit you are using (i.e. you almost certainly use say a Mobil1 filter, but it may not be the same one that fits on the Exby remote mount).
Hope that was clear.:D

Came across this old thread. Some information is misleading to say the least.

The Amsoil Universal Dual Remote By-Pass is what any Expedition owner would want. They can be mounted high or low (I recommend high if your truck is taken off road). If no off roading is involved or its only improved gravel roads at worst, then mounting it low right behind the bumper is perfect.

https://www.amsoil.com/bypassfilters/2008_Ford_Expedition_Ott.pdf

The filters do not reach below the frame rails so they are safe and the mounting bracket mounts directly to the cross beam with 16 to 20 inch remote lines to and from the location of the OEM filter which is replaced by the filter adapter to feed the Dual Remote By-Pass.

The issue with only a dual remote (not true remote by-pass) is that in proper use it only really adds the extra oil capacity of the second filter plus just a slight additional filtration of the second standard filter. DO NOT use a by-pass filter with a dual remote only because if the by-pass filter becomes clogged your engine will have no oil flow as many By-pass filters do not have safety valves. At the most use two high quality extended use oil filters. A true Dual Remote By-Pass system can use a super filtering By-Pass Filter and never worry if that filter clogs because the By-Pass plate only picks off 10% of the passing oil from the first filter to super filter which is why its called a by-pass. If the by-pass clogs, oil still flows at normal rate through the first filter and back to the engine. The cheap JC Whitney dual remote only just has two filters hung on the same plate daisy chained together so if a 2 micron By-Pass is placed in the second location and becomes clogged, oil flow is cut off. If one is going to really take advantage of remotely locating their oil filter, might as well do a true By-Pass setup and remove all the junk that causes most of the engine wear. Just make sure the Dual Remote you choose is designed to be used with a By-Pass Filter so the second filter location only pulls 10 to 15% of the main flow to be filtered. Remember that even at only 10%, your total oil up to 12 quarts would be completely filtered several time by the bypass each hour.

Guest, you should not post when you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

The Amsoil Dual Remote Bypass DOES NOT just "simply increases the oil flow that can be filtered", it actually uses a true Bypass Filter to super filter the oil down to 2 microns as well as add additional oil volume. It is NOT just the addition of a second filter, so it actual does have tremendous value in adding engine protection as well as additional oil volume which helps lower oil temperature. So if one is going to the trouble of remotely loacting their oil filter, one might as well take advantage of a Universal Dual Remote Bypass instead of just installing a single filter remote.

Note: the Amsoil Universal Dual Remote Bypass helps lower oil temperatures in most applications due to added oil volume, moving the two larger then OEM Filters away from the engine and into a cooler air flow, plus by increasing the surface area to dissipate heat.
