Checked my air filter on my ‘24 Expy, with only 12,500 miles and it’s absolutely filthy.

My ‘22 Expy had the same thing, but it was closer to 18,000 miles.

Is this normal for Expeditions?

I used to change the engine air filter on my 2015 Expedition Limited every 15,000 miles - using a OEM Motorcraft filter. Ford specified 30,000 miles.

The filter would often be dirty, but not absolutely filthy. I only drove on paved roads, but there were a lot of farms in the area I live.

Engine air filter changing is easy, inexpensive and is a good preventative maintenance for the engine.

Not surprisingly, my experience with air filters is their rate of debris fill is about 3 things: Environment, environment, environment.

I drive my vehicles in NC for ~9 months a year, and in MI for ~2 months a year, elsewhere the rest of the time. NC has very few unpaved roads, and from a MI perspective, there are NO insects in NC. MI not so much. I use K&N washable engine air filters and cabin air filters. And I keep the cleaning/oiling products at my place in MI. They never need to be cleaned when I'm driving in NC. In MI, some years I clean them twice in two months because I drive almost entirely on unpaved roads in bug storms. It's easier than stocking paper filters and allows for cleaning in remote hunting locations in South Dakota and Idaho, etc.

I have a 2018 and at about 15k it looks pretty dirty. Somewhere between 15-20k I’ve been changing it with a genuine Motorcraft replacement and have no unpaved roads where I drive here in the Northeast.

We drive all over the east coast from Quebec City to Key West, FL. I just looked at my notes and I changed the air filter with ~16,800 miles and I had noted "moderate dirt". Factory interval says 30K miles. For me I wouldn't sweat between 15-20K unless I had a major change in driving habits/locations.

I’ve owned many vehicles, mostly trucks, and I have NEVER had a dirty air filter at anything less than 24,000 miles. So must be an Expedition thing, which is fine, just need to check more often.

Might look at a cold air intake to see if a different setup is a little better.

We change our air filters annually, regardless of mileage. It's really cheap "life insurance" for your engine. Actually, a filthy air filter MIGHT be a good thing. It indicates that it's doing its job. I would increase the change interval though.

Cleanliness of air and how much of it. That's really about all that can impact your air filter. Towing our camper the engine is continuously spinning twice the rpm it would be piddling around suburbia, so figure about twice the air passing through it per driven mile. Perception can be one more factor - back to the camper example, we spent a month out West in some seriously dusty conditions. Filter element was an orange/yellow color so really didn't "look" all that bad. Midwest farm fields may make it look worse.
