Mine currently has 147k on it. While I fully expect it to last to 200+ there is always the possibility that the eng or trans might go out on me at which point I will have to make the decision to either spend the cash to fix it or just upgrade to a newer expedition (most likely an EL). Anyway, was wondering what you all thought about either of these paths.
I like the relatively low-tech aspect of my 98 and that I can do most of the work on it. Are the newer ones just as easy to work on or do you have to take it to the dealer just to replace the battery because the computer needs to be re-programmed (got a friend with a newer BMW who had to pay $500 to get this done recently)?
What eng/trans re-builders do you guys like?
My 98 currently has enough power to tow our camper, but a couple of extra ponies would definitely be appreciated. What should I look for in a new/re-built engine to get added HP, without going crazy though?
Anybody had any luck getting this work done by a dealer? I would love to do it myself but won't have the time/tools.
Thanks if advance for input. Again I don't expect to have to do this for a while but would like to have a plan set in place before it happens.
