175 lb/ft would have trashed your bearings if not broken something, lucky your instinct told you otherwise. 300 inch pounds should be on the safe side but make sure you follow the correct procedure before you drive on it or you may damage the bearings prematurely.
4wd hubs are completely different set up. No bearing pre-load and power is applied through the hub so major difference in procedure and torque.
