Can it be done -- so I can skip the trailer?

My guess would be no. Probably the mower height will prevent loading in the back without some major disassembly. Just from failing memory, 34 inches seems like the max height, but you'll have to measure the hatch and the mower yourself to be sure. Otherwise, a couple stout lads could lift it into the back once you remove the third row seat and fold the middle seats flat. I've put some big and heavy stuff back there. You can always rent a trailer pretty cheap, or even a truck from some Home Depos.

Sure it could handle the weight but dimensions... probably not.

Tape measure! :)

Not sure I would want the gas tank venting in the interior though disregarding the potential mess it may make.

I rented a uhaul enclosed trailer for a day and it was like 40 bucks. An open one will be cheaper than that.
