Replacing bearings in the rear end of a 99 expedition. Put it back together and now the pinion gets bound up when moving it in the forward direction. Moves freely in the reverse direction. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Also is there a specific direction the crush collar should go in?

can't even get the bearing to set in the race. It is like the nut runs out of threads on the pinion. But there are still threads..

I have yet to set up a 9.5 rear but have done 8.8 in my mustang. The crush collar on it could go either way.

It sounds to me as if your gear mesh is incorrect. Either the pinion depth is not properly set or back lash is to tight. Did you reuse original pinion and carrier shims?!

New crush collar?? Takes a lot of torque to begin the crush process.

Trying to tighten the pinion, is it normal for the rotational torque to diminish after rotating the pinion a few times. Had it set at 20 inch pounds, rotated it a few times and it reads 15 inch pounds.

16-29 in/lbs per video, shouldn't diminish after turning. I'd go slightly more.

Just to ask a silly question, but, when you bought parts, did you get the parts for a post mid-2000 axle or for a pre-mid-2000 axle. I found out the hard way that Ford did a revision to the axles in mid 2000 and changed how they were manufacturing the axles. This causes things to be in slightly different positions and if you put the wrong kit in, it can lead to issues.

So, in short, you have 4 kits to look at. You have pre 2000 axle with pre 2000 gears, pre 2000 axle with post 2000 gears, post 2000 axle with post 2000 gears, and post 2000 axle with pre 2000 gears. It can make getting parts a little interesting.

I'm not sure what parts were bought as the guy I'm helping bought the parts. I'll ask him when I go over to his shop next weekend. we got it set to 24 inch pounds but it sounds as if the seal is rubbing cause it squeaks when we rotate it..
