It depends on what kind of bass you're looking for and how much space you have to spare.

Sealed boxes have a smaller air space requirement then ported boxes so Sealed boxes are much smaller than ported. From the Sealed box you will get a tighter bass and somewhat better sound quality.

Ported Boxes require more air space and take up more of the trunk area than a Sealed Box. The bass from a ported box is generally louder than bass from a sealed box. What I mean by louder is it will take less power from the amp to get more bass from a ported box than a sealed. And if the box is tuned properly can also have good sound quality in certain frequency ranges.

I run sealed boxes because I like the tighter bass and the smaller size that the sealed box produces.

I've got a sealed box that fits 2 12s behind the third row perfectly. I'm selling it, as I now have a different set up with a single 10. Let me know if you are interested in buying it.

I have a small sealed box for my 10". Sounds good enough for me, especially the tight bass :)

or just make your own. go buy some 1/4" thick mdf and build one to specs of your subs. theres calculators out there to help you out too if you get stuck.

not only does it matter on what type of bass...tight vs booming...but some brands sound better in sealed vs vented...and vice versa...i've been told that my CVR's are better sealed...but L5/L7 are best vented...i want the best of both worlds...i want tight booming bass...still working on that one...

What are your guy's thoughts on building one?

Im good with carpentry. So it could be cheaper. Prolly not even 30-40 bucks for wood, glue, and carpet stuff.

Ross, if you are wanting loud bass that is still tight, then what you are wanting is referred to as a "single reflex" box. I have used these in the past and you can make a 10 sound like a 12 and whatnot. The downside to this is that the box is nothing short of massive. Essentially you are having to build both a vented box and a ported box for the same speaker. The speaker fires into a sealed box while the backside of the speaker sits in the vented box. I used to run a pair of Orion 10" DVC's in a single reflex box. That was great. But, each speaker required a cubic foot for the associated box and that was running the speakers at their bare minimum sizes. A 12" speaker would need a box that is about 2.5 cubic feet for each speaker, or something about the size of the area behind your rear seats.

If you need any help building a speaker box, let me know. Another one of the things that I have invested some time into.

I generally don't recommend bandpass boxes unless they're going to have one made by a pro for their specific subwoofers. They have to be built and tuned correctly or they may not sound good at all.
