For all of you with idling problems I found out yesterday that Ford has a TSB out concerning an electrical lead that runs around the power steering pump and oil pressure sending unit that can short to ground causing the following problems.

Cuts out when idling (mine cut out at traffic lights)
Rough Idle
Hard Start
No Start
Cutting out when cornering

The Service Advisor informed me of this yesterday after I took my 2003 EB 5.4L to the second dealership for the same problem. According to them a little bit of heat shrink around the scuffed part of the wire solves the problem. This is supposed to also solve the hard starting problem I've had for the last 80,000 miles that the dealer could never fix.

The first dealership changed the IAC and when the problem returned two days later they said they could not do anything unless they could read some codes. Apparently they can not read TSBs either.

Hope this helps you folks.

Not sure. I am travelling this week, and next, so my wife will pick the Expedition up from the dealer this weekend. I am going to have her drive the vehicle for awhile and see if the problem was actually corrected with some heat shrink.

I will call the service advisor and see if I can get a copy of the TSB or at least the TSB number for future reference.

I tried locating the TSB on the web however all of the sites want you to join for a fee before you can download anything.

More to follow in the next week or two.

I tried that site the other night. It only provides a summary of the TSB and not the details.

Edmunds.com will provide the summary for free and the details after you register and pay their fee. I believe the fee is for an annual membership.

There has got to be a site that provides the details without charge and if it exists I will find it in due time.

Thanx

Well guys and gals, this saga has come to a close.

The heat shrink on the electrical lead has apparently fixed the problem with my 2003 Eddie Bauer 5.4.

My wife picked up the Expedition and used it to run her errands and go shopping. She put about 75 miles on the vehicle and stopped at about twenty traffic lights and ten stop signs.

According to my wife there was only one hesitation when taking off and she blames herself for that for not allowing the vehicle to warm up before taking off. She says that after that initial hesitation there were no cut outs at idle or while cornering. She also told me that she did not experience the hard starting problem the original dealer could never correct.

When I get home next weekend, after I give the baby a B & B (Bath and Buff) I will see if the repaired lead is accessible for a digital photo. If so I'll post a picture for others to identify what to look for and as a reference.
