What causes this light to turn on? Thanks in advance. 03 xlt expedition 4.6

Could be a hundred different reasons. Hook up a code reader and go from there.

try a different store, or buy a code reader and load an app to use it, nice to have

i've got SES light (03 expy) and my code is P0446 but yours could be anything

Go back to Autozone and find someone that knows what they are doing. "Check Engine Light" is a generic term. On the Ford Expo it is labeled "Service Engine Soon." Plug the code reader into the connector under the dash by your right knee. The code may be something minor, or your engine could decide not to run shortly. The Autozone guy did not know what he was talking about.

Agreed go back and see a grey shirt. If the light is on you can pull a code.
