Shopping for an Expedition: Tow Packing questions

I am looking for a 2nd gen expedition probably an 05-06. From reading the 2003 brochure and from what I have seen on the 03's it looks like they all came the 7 pin trailer plug even if they did not have the rest of the HD towing package. This does not seem to be the case on 05-06 years.

I looked at several different Expeditions including 2 really clean 05 XLT's last night. Both are in great shape and have all the features I want except the HD tow package. I'm trying to decide if I should keep looking for one with the tow package or buy one of the ones I found and add the tow package features myself.

The 05's I looked at have the hitch and 4 pin plug but no 7 pin plug. There was a blue trailer brake wire tucked behind the bumper and they do have the brake controller plug under the dash. My understanding is that even with the blue brake wire in place at the bumper I would still need to run a wire from the front to recharge the trailer battery and for backup lights.

Was the tow package an uncommon option for 05-06 or am I just not having any luck finding one?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I think it just might be your luck. The few I looked at all had them. You can add everything to make it have the "tow package". The hardest thing to add would be the 3.73 gears unless by chance yours had that anyway.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that both did have the 3.73 gears already. However they were both 3.73 open not the trac lok version. I thought this was strange since I had assumed all 4x4 expeditions would have a trak lok rear.

I didn't think you could get the traction loc on the IRS. I thought that went away with Gen II and traction control (not that its the same as a LS rear).

I wasn't aware of that but you may be right. Can anyone confirm?

Looking at the brochure again. It looks like you can have a 3.73 trak lok on the IRS but not if you have traction control.

Has anyone added all of the HD tow package features to a Expedition that wasn't equiped that way.
