I purchased a 2004 Expedition. I was changing the oil and tried to turn the front driveshaft. It will not free spin like I am used to on other 4 wheel drives I have owned in the past. Are there front locking hubs on these vehicles or is the transfercase not letting it spin.

Thanks

hubs are always on the 4awd is ready to engauge with the slip of the rear wheels. this is detcted through the abs system.
then the T case uses magnetic clutches to engauge the front wheels and bring them up to speed

in 2wd yes the front drive shaft will spin cause the hubs are locked on at all times. if you had manuel hubs, which they dont make for expos. :( then the front shaft should spin freely with your hand.

WOW is all I can say.

So the driveshaft is always turning because of the front hubs, and only get power to it when its swithed to 4WD? WTF where they thinking. It might as well be an All Wheel Drive with no option for 2WD or 4WD.

I have always been a Ford man for trucks and own a F250 and the drive shaft dosent turn on it.
