I hand washed my '20 Expedition yesterday and discovered a significant silt trap. "Like" if you've already discovered it. If you haven't, I'm sorry to spoil your day. I noticed that when I rinsed the liftgate I kept seeing fine silt on the painted portion below the backlight (rear window). OMG. I sprayed water along the bottom edge of the thin chrome trim strip below the backlight for 10 minutes and pumped what seemed like a 1/4 yard of silt out from underneath that strip. It must have been completely packed with road silt. If you haven't put significant water pressure directly under yours lately, it'll probably be full of silt as well.

Conclusion: The D&R Engineer responsible for the exterior trim on the liftgates of the 4th Gen. should have to go to bed without dinner for a year. There really should be a rubber dust lip under the trim to control the silt hang up.

I may have to Engineer something....I'll keep you all posted.

There's actually quite a few just like this. I find that area, the area directly under the liftglass where the hinges are is always covered in dust, the plastic protector on the top of the bumper (think where you might sit), on the Platinum (not sure about the others) the grill is actually a couple of layers of plastic not sealed together so I get a lot of dirt between those pieces, even behind the $1200 tail light housings. What's also fun is when water becomes ice in those areas, expands, and only makes the gaps bigger.

With the rear glass almost completely upright (not much rake to it all), I find the expy gets grime and dust etc back there pretty bad. The chrome strip is quite bad but another area that collects debris is the rear bumper cover behind each wheel. In the winter it collects snow like a mother and even if you see no evidence of packed snow near the mudflaps, its all jammed in that bumper cover.

When I run water over the rear roof for a period of time I can see the washing out of pebbles, debris and smaller rocks. Crazy.

Couldn't agree more with @Gumby. I sat one day for about 10 minutes banging rocks and debris out from behind the bumper cover, between the inside of the cover and the plastic structure behind it. And that's with Weathertech mudflaps installed. There should have been some sort of plastic shield that surrounds the spare tire and covers the inside of the bumper. Heck, that would actually help aerodynamics, the bumper cover is like a small parachute.

The low horizontal part line that goes from the side of the rear bumper cover to the moulding around the hitch I find houses a lot of dirt. I can never get dirt to stop falling out of the area.

I was on some dirt roads in the UP of Michigan for over a week and when the dirt roads are dry there is a fine clay silt. I had it spilling out from tail lights, chrome trim, bumper top guard what seem like for 10-15 minutes with a power washer. Makes you make because after you clean and wipe the back down it still oozes out and dries. On top of it I have a black expy.

yup. every piece of trim on the whole car seems to have this problem.

I know this is an older thread ... But have any of you with dust issues on/around the rear hatch, have dust issues inside the vehicle? I live in a rural area drive 8 miles of gravel a day, the dust inside gets so bad that my son cant stop sneezing, literally can write your name on flat surfaces after a couple days. I have had the rear hatch adjusted tighter, drive with the fan on High, replaced the rear hatch gasket (suggested by Ford). Ford sent me a prepaid gift card for my troubles but no further recommendations after that. I did install another gasket with hopes of a tighter seal, it did help probably cutting the dust down about 30%. I have 3 other friends that have the same issue, all being '18-'21 model years. Interested if anyone that has dealt with it found a solution, that doesn't involve moving into town. :)

This is a interesting subject and deserves it's own thread.

This might help,
