I am painting the roof with POR 15's Whitecote. A 2 part epoxy (I think?) indestructible paint to seal up the roof. The truck came from Kansas, where they don't know what road salt is. I live near Syracuse, the salt city. Looking closely at the roof, I can see cracks in the thin paint, and a couple spots that are scratched to metal. Seeing the pics on the net of rusted roof areas, particularity, in the recessed areas, I figure I would make a pre-emptive strike on the paint. I can see where salty water could just sit in the roof "ditches" and create havoc given a chance. Hopefully whitecote is not too different looking......WHITECOTE-POR-15 Inc.

Well, I'm filing that under BAD IDEA.

Did you know that if you remove the windshield molding, you can not put it back on? Windshield has to come out to put it back on.
Plus, the paint is advertised to flow out, and not leave brush marks.

No. It really looks like someone (me!) BRUSHED THE ROOF WITH A FRIGGIN PAINT BRUSH.

LOL, that's the before pic. I got the windshield molding on about 80%, I will have to wait for more time. I actually does not look tooooooooo bad now, BUT: I would not recommend the process unless you know the possibilities. Really should just pay someone to spray the roof. I love por 15 paint though, it REALLY seals stuff up.

I hope this isn't a stupid question but, what was the reason for doing this? Was it rust? I have a ding on my roof that that was on there when I bought the truck last week. But it's chipped and has a little rust spot.

I live in Syracuse, NY. All winter long, they salt the hell out of these roads. More so than I heave seen in any other area. (And I travel a LOT)
The reason I bought this truck was my 04 Durango got swiss cheese syndrome. I saw this XP sitting on a lot in Kansas, and it looked NEW inside and out, and most importantly, underneath. So instead of using my perfectly good non refundable airline ticket to get home, I bought this bad boy and drove almost 1500 miles home. Bought it at 2pm on a Saturday, and HAD to be at work Monday morning.....But I digress......

I want to get 4 good years of it looking decent. I ran across all sorts of posts of people having issues with the thin paint, and corrosion of the aluminum parts. When I was washing it, I noticed minute scratches in the rook, and cracks in the paint in the recessed channels in the roof. I saw the water pool in those, and KNEW that if I left this alone, the salt water in the winter will do its deed, and the four years may be in jeopardy. I know there are plenty of people with repaired roofs that had holes from the rust.

So this is one of the many things I have done to prevent that as much as possible. I also have a couple gallons of cp90
CP-90 - Rust Control Product for Cars, Trucks and Vehicles
to coat anything suspicious. I still have to find a way to spray that inside the rocker panels.

I actually did hit a few spots underneath with por 15, but for the most part, I am going to keep it wet with anti corrosion oil, cp90.

Here is the descriptor for whitecote: " WHITECOTE cures to a rock-hard, non-porous finish that won't chip, crack, or peel when applied as directed. It's perfect for wrought iron patio furniture, plumbing fixtures, etc., because it's super-tough, not UV-sensitive, and brilliantly white."

por-15 really does make some awesome products i used to work an a automotive paint store mixing paints etc and wow every hot rodder in town uses it i swear. they make awesome trunk paint well awesome everything paint actually. i know alot of people that have brushed it on their frames during a frame off restoration and it came out smooth as can be and the stuff really is rock hard

What temp and humidity was it that day? Higher temps and higher humidity levels will make it set up faster not allowing proper "flow out" time. Also painting it outside in the sun can increase the surface temp too which will increase set up time as well.
