I have a 99 Eddie Bauer 4wd/Awd 5.4L Automatic Tranny
When on a steep grade it feels like the tranny or trasfer case is slipping in first gear. It slips or jerks 3 or 4 times and then is fine as I go through the gear box. I notice it more on steep grades and when the tranny is hot. What could this be ??

When was the last time your tranny was serviced?

Your symptoms sound like a low fluid level, but it could be more than that, like dirty fluid and/or a gummed up system.

First, check your fluid level.

Next, take it in to your favorite shop and get the system POWER FLUSHED. I would also recommend switching to a synthetic tranny fluid. I have changed all of my fluids to synthetics, and I can absolutely say that my tranny respond was much improved (smoother shifting, etc.).

Good Luck!:D

Thanks
Im recently dropped the pan and changed the filter. Did not use synthetic fluid however. Will try that...Thanks! Does a power flush also service the transfer case?

The problem with changing the tranny fluid by draining from the pan is that you only get about 50% of the old fluid changed. In your profile I see you have an EB. That means you have a remote tranny fluid cooler. So when you simply drain the fluid, you are keeping all the fluid in the torque converter, and the remote oil cooler, and the lines to/from the oil cooler. Plus, all the fluid in all the galleys of the transmission, and all the crud that sticks behid as well.

During a POWER FLUSH, new fluid is recirculated around the system a few times, forcing new fluid in and washing away all the crud. This is hands down the only way to service the transmission.

The transfer case is seperate, but a simple drain for this system is sufficient, and it takes the same trans fluid as the tranny.
