Well my trans crapped out on me today. I was coming home from school today and i was stopped at a light. when it turned green i gave it gas to go and the rpms went up to 3000 before it kicked in/. I felt like i was driving a manuel trans without a clutch. So long storu short it is now parked. The question i have is: what is the bell housing bolt pattern and could i get a F-250 transmission to bolt up to my engine. I have a 4.6L w series.

get a manuel! need a little computer work, but who cares? itll be sick! haha and with the 4.6 you can get the mustang 6 speed. or even an f250 6speed. do that! go all out! haha but i think the auto can fit with very little issues.

when you say f250 trans what are you referring too??

the 4r100? or manual or???

I dont know, i just dont want to put the same type of trans i have back in because of my tires i feel like it would just break again. I just want a beefier trans and want to know if another type of used trans would bolt up to my 4.6.
And hell no to a manual trans. Not in a million years.

i would talk to BTS or JOHN WOODS and have them either built you tranny or atleast get the valve body from them and torque converter..

both of them can build the trannys to handle anything..

which tranny do you have the 4R100 or the 4R70W

the 4R100 with a good rebuilt and an aftermarket valve body and torque converter is more tranny then you need anyways

besure to get a big cooler for it

Are you sure it isn't just the torque converter. Those are the weak link in the trans from what I have read. You can probably get the trans rebuilt and a heavy duty torque converter for around $1200-1500.

thats so weird... I haven't had any problems with mine **knock on wood**, but am following your thread to see how it works out for ya...and don't think I'll ever go bigger than 37s.. but my 97 f150 had 38x15.5 with 4.6 and still doesn't have a problem except motor finally went on it.... but interested in whats wrong with your tranny

I have the 4R70W. I have a feeling if i get some one to build or rebuild me a tranny that is gonna cost big money. I just redid my gears so i dont have a grand or more to spend on a tranny. So really i guess my question is can i get a 4R100 tranny(used doesnt matter) for around $500 or $600 and will it bolt up to my engine?

$1200-$1500 is out of the question. if it ends up costing that much i would just start parting the truck out. Definetly dont have that kind of money.

your gonna need some computer work to get the 4r100 to work but picking one up for 350-400 isn't that hard to find then get the valve body and bigger cooler when you get the cash... also an extra deep pan is good

an A4OD tranny might be easierwhich is just an updated 4r100

and the A4OD came in the 97 expy's

What kind of computer work are we talking about?
What makes going with the A4OD easier?

the 4R70W is 100% computer controlled where th4R100 is computer over vacum

the A4OD is 100% computer controlled but still uses the the larger valvebody and has over sized pan options in the aftermarket and upgraded valvebody is availible..

plus the A4OD come's in the early 1st gen expy's like mine.. so the mounts and bell housing are the same

I called my transmission guy today and from what i described to him, he also said it sounds like the torque converter went bad but wasnt 100% sure.

Ok i guess once i get some money ill try to find a used A4OD and get it upgraded.

You could always buy a torque converter and pull your tranny and have a buddy help you swap it out. You could do it in a weekend in a driveway. I know from experience. Beer will go a long way to convincing friends to bring their tools boxes over to turn a wrench. Tops on that route would be somewhere between $300 and $500 including a couple cases of beer.

The biggest thing that kills torque converters is heat and poor filtration. So you will also want to change your filter, fluid and add a bigger trans cooler while you are at it.

Yea i might try this. my only reservation is if the problem is more than just the torque converter. Then ive spent 400 bucks that couldve gone to rebuilding or getting a new one.

You could always pull your trans and take it to the shop to have it diagnosed before you buy any parts. Or you could go the cheapest route and search auto recyclers for a complete setup to put into your truck. I have paid $200 for a complete trans with torque converter. The biggest thing is to make sure it is good shape before spending all that time swapping them out. Then you have your original trans to use as a heavy duty rebuild when you have the funds available.

Yea thats what i wanted to do. I just want to get a used trans for cheap just to get it running again. That is also why i was wanting to know if a beefier trans would bolt right up with no issues. But it ounds like i would have to do quite a bit of stuff to make a trans other than the 4R70W to fit.

when i had my truck in for a flush and filter they said keep an eye on the tq converter they said they are notorious. from what i have found it is because of the car like feel. ford made these things shift smoother for luxury but it also causes it to have more problems which is why gettin an edge and bumping up your shift pressure is so good for ur tranny. every shop i have talked to about my truck has said they do a lot of expy tq converters from what i hear these trucks actually have a very strong tranny its just that damn converter issue. mine slips occasionally so i keep an eye on it.
