My expedition has the smell of burning rubber when get back from a drive. I could it be the brake linings?

Not unless you have rubber brake pads!

I'd start by checking under the hood & underneath the truck for any hose or rubber part that comes in contact with anything that gets hot during operation.

sounds like a problem i had with my 99 expy. for me it was a blown intake gasket or head gasket (however it's termed). lost my truck for 2 weeks. thank god i still had my warranty. oil was leaking from the gasket and burned off on some hot part of the engine before it hit the ground, so i never noticed a leak of any kind. i never had any low oil issues either so i'd guess it's just a small drip. from what i've read, it's a common problem for those years. good luck.
