OK so I have just received a new to me expedition it's a 97 V8 slt 4x4 210k miles the truck had been sitting for over a year with only a few starts here and there. My first problem was to charge the battery change the oil and oil filter air filter fuel filter drain the old gas and change the old belt. After charging the battery and starting it i drove it around to warm up the oil nothing out of the normal happen during my drive around the dirt roads. After I changed the oil and filter and the air filter i started it again and now it smokes from the exhaust pipe in medium amounts and more when I give it more gas. I haven't drained the fuel or fuel filter yet but it will be done tomorrow I just found out that one of the spark plugs where changed and heli coiled up due to blowing out the top. this was done during the year it was sitting. my hope is that it's just the fuel blowing some nasty stuff up but my gut tells me it's the valves. Any help would be appreciated!

If you used synthetic oil, which is thinner, that would happen. If it's bluish smoke, its oil slipping past worn valve seals.

Lets start with why it was sitting for over a year...

So 10w30 dino oil is thicker than 10w30 synthetic oil?

The color of the "smoke" will determine the source. Bluish is oil burning, white is coolant and will smell sweet. The oil will also have an oder but different from the coolant.

Man by the title of this thread I thought you ment you did an oil change then smoked after it... cause I was gonna say even something as small as an oil change calls for a celebratory smoke that's the damn truth.

Back to subject, before you start scratching ur head and bust ur knuckles trying to figure out what's what, I honestly highly recommend you take it for a drive 30-50 miles long, reaching highway speeds and an occasional heavy acceleration from stop... do that first then report back on the results.

(Easiest way to do this is swap ur plates for a day and drive it to work and back)

Yeah, got to agree with the Habitrail.....run it for a day then see what you've got......if the sealing orings around the spark plug tubes have begun leaking, they will cause the plugs to short...the engine will not fire on all pots and because raw fuel is being few to the catalytic converter, it will billow white smoke...so check that BEFORE you drive it all day so you don't ruin the CC. You can easily tell by looking into each plug tube....it's its half filled with oil, it's got a fail o-ring. It happened on a car I let sit for a year.....fixed it and the car ran fine.
