Hey guys and girls I need some advice. I am going to be buying a Garmin GPS and would like to hide the power wire behind the dash and tie the power wire into the cigarette power feed behind the console. I am not an "experienced" electrician but know enough to be dangerous. My questions is I would rather not solder behind the dash or at all. Can I use the crimp connectors and trust that they will hold for a long time? Going for the finished look and hate wires hanging all over the place. I have the cigarette lighter then next to that a 12V output. Which one will turn the power off when the car goes off? Maybe I should be taping into the 12V outlet instead??? HELP

in my 04 EB...the cigarette lighter in the coin tray doesnt shut off...i can plug my phone charger in and it will receive power regardless if its running or not...continuous power...the other one on the passenger side is only on for when truck is started and seems to only stay on for 3hrs or so...just run wire to battery or find the turn-on circuit in the fuse box...will need a meter to find the one that turns on when the truck is in 'on' position and not 'aac'...

My cigarette lighter never shuts off either. I hard wired a Valentine One radar detector a few weeks ago. I used the switched 12V line that turns the radio on. (It's the red wire if you have an aftermarket head unit with a wiring harness.) I had it mounted by the rear-view mirror. I ran the wires on top of the headliner, down the pillar on the drivers side, and then behind the dash to near where the radio is.
