Could y’all compare this to your expedition (maybe 2019-2024 or so). I’m getting a lot of engine noise in my cabin, specifically hpfp tick, and my mechanic stethoscope draws me to the steering column in the footwell. I feel like the grommet is poorly seated.

Hard to tell but the right side and bottom don’t have as much insulation around it like it folded in or something

That honestly looks perfectly normal. What year and model level are you dealing with?

Sound may travel up the column to the inside of the cab. Kinda like a stethoscope.

2024 ford expedition platinum. here is a link to a video (YouTube compression makes the frequency of the sound less dramatic that it really is, but it’s best hear halfway through video). Sounds like garbage to hear this while driving.

For sure and it may be normal - but when I heard it loudest at this point it too me down this rabbit hole - there is definitely a gap of come sort in the sound insulation, as I hear this ticking louder than engine roar most of the time. Here’s a video - YouTube compression messes with the frequency and makes the higher pitch ticking even less dramatic than it actually is - but halfway through it comes through pretty clear. Again this is taken from inside the car

I replayed it at through headphones at different volumes and I'm getting a bunch of road noise. Maybe a very faint "tick" but nothing noteworthy. But thats me with old ears. Were it me, if it was a pia I'd turn up the radio.
One question though, is it speed sensitive?

I was afraid of that - YouTube compression kills the audio frequency it’s occurring at. It is speed sensitive.

I do try to turn on the radio, but I can still hear it over that many times, it’s just terrible.

I wouldn’t care about this sound if my car was making it - it’s more that it’s so loud in the Cabin. It overpowers even the engine roar (or fake engine roar). :)

The sound is easiest to hear midway through the clip. But it’s a fast trilling noise like a old hard drive thinking.

Okay, It's speed sensitive, are you sure it is not rotational? Could it be rpm sensitive? I know some of the following are dumb but not knowing what you have done to locate or isolate the noise, Does it do it with everything shut off? Heated/cooled seats, everything off. Fold in the mirrors, roof racks? have you checked the plastic shields?
4WD or 2? Were it me I'd have it up on jack stands and gradually run it up to speed.

While yes YouTubes compression can minimize some things, it is FAR more detrimental to video than Audio. Do you hear it yourself in your own video when playing from YouTube?

That being said, you could also upload the Raw file to Google Drive, and paste a view link here, so we can download the original and listen. I am only on my Work laptop right now, with not so great speakers, I will listen later on something that will more accurately reproduce it.

Yes it’s RPM sensitive sorry, not speed sensitive. It gets louder as i rev.

The sound occurs when hvac on or off, windows up or down (easier to hear when up though) windshield wipers on or off, stereo on or off, etc. heated and cooled seats on or off, I’ve tried to determine if it’s an electrical sound because it’s a sometimes sound like a crackle, but it doesn’t seem to be electrical. It’s 4wd as well and I’ve tried in all modes and the sound remains the same. I’ve just been pulling my hair out over this dang it

Ok for sure! Let me see about doing that and I’ll post it on here.

Ok here is the link -

There is a secondary ticking im getting (you’ll hear it at 15 seconds and other times in the video) but that secondary ticking only happens when the engine in cold - but the one that’s driving me nuts is the one that sticks around.

At around 24 seconds I’m slowing down so a little less road noise rumble makes the tick easier to discern.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks

So, if you sit in neutral at say 800rpm you can here the sound? The further you increase the rpm the noise becomes louder until it is continuous? I don't hear it on either track. But I don't hear high pitch sounds. Too many locomotives in my past to have sharp hearing.
Seems to me you need a stethoscope or a long extension pressed against your ear (careful with this one) to help isolate it. You could remove your belt and perhaps take a few things out of the possibilities.

It’s crazy to me that you can’t hear it - it is so very loud - but it is certainly a higher pitched sound than the other sounds in the videos. I can hear it sometimes right at idle, but typically I can start to hear it maybe around 1000rpm. To make sure we’re listening for the same thing, it’s a Geiger counter like ticking, or card in bike spokes, or leaf caught in a fan - fast tick/trill. I have have a mechanic stethoscope. From within the car, it’s loudest right where the vin number is on the dashboard, under where it says sound screen. And then it’s loudest under the dash in the footwell where the steering column goes through the firewall.
