2006 has always had excessive steering wheel play. About an inch. when under warranty the dealer agreed it was in the steering rack and replaced it only to find that it did not solve the problem. I'm still convinced it is in the rack, but it seems the only ones available are reman units from Cardone which i have no faith in . Has anyone had a similar issue and know where one can get a new rack or at least know of a decent reman company

Have you lifted up the front end to take a look at it? These things eat inner tie rods for lunch. They need to be checked every 30,000 miles. If you don't want to do it take it to an alignment shop and let them check everything out.
The Expeditions have very light duty front suspension components.
