I took my vehicle in to have the tires replaced and the alignment done at my local Ford dealer. The dealer indicated that they did not recommend doing the alignment until the intermediate steering shaft is replaced due to the excessive amount of play in it. They indicated the cost to supply and replace the part would be just under $1000.

I have looked online for an aftermarket replacement intermediate steering shaft so that I could replace it myself. I have found that there is one available made by Dorman (part no. 425-354) half the price of the Ford part. The only problem is that it is for vehicles made after 4/26/2001. I contacted Dorman to see if they had one for vehicles made before this date as mine was made 10/27/2000. They indicated they did not. I looked up the Ford part on fordparts.com and they indicate that they are two different ones available, one is for before 4/26/01 and another is for after.

Has anyone else encountered this problem locating an aftermarket replacement intermediate steering shaft for the earlier build date and know where I could get one? Thank You in advance.

The Callout Name and numbers are the same. If yours was built 10/27/2000 its a 2000 and would use a 2000 part.

eBay shows them for sale all from Ford Dealer and at around $300.00. Try a junkyard if they have it out or can pull it you would be ahead. If you can pull it yourself sometimes it's a lot cheaper and it will give you practice to take yours off. Plus you'll know what to look for. Obviously grab one before 4/26/01. Always grab the extra parts just in case you need them to replace something.

Thank You for your information and response. I guess the OEM part is the only one available other than used. Thanks again.
