Putting this here for someone who may search the forum like I did.

My new to me 2000 with the Mach sound system had a crackle at high volume. While replacing the right second row seat belt, I took a look at the sub woofer and saw the cone had started to fall apart. Searched here for some options to replace the factory original, but I did not want to spend big bucks for big sound with the plug and play aftermarket options, just not that important to me.

Headed to the junk yard, and the five or so 1997 to 2000 hulks either were missing the sub or were just as worn or worse than mine. At least I am not alone!

Went to the 'other' junk yard, was told I had 20 minutes to pick before closing time. Again, no luck on finding anything in an Expo, started walking out, noticed a 2002 Explorer with a right rear speaker panel. I wonder?

With only a few minutes left, I did a less than stellar job removing the panel, found a sub that looked right, but it had four wires instead of the two on mine, maybe I can make it work, so what the heck, removed it and bought it, only ten bucks.

Comparing the original to the 2002 Explorer version, it is much 'beefier', even seems the cone might be some sort of poly-something. The plug to go into the amp is identical to the original, except for the four wires. the mounting holes match the original, but there were two plastic alignment nubs on the 2002 sub that I had to clip off. NOTE: the mounting screw on the back that goes into the magnet is different, so be sure to take that with you from the junk yard!

Put everything back together, cranked up some heavy base tunes, and it worked like a champ! Another cheap, successful fix, hope this helps someone else!

Congrats! I have heard some speculation that our amps have another channel that might be usable. It might be worth going back to the "other" junk yard and snagging another plug and wiring it up.

See, that's just it: the plugs match, the only difference being the four wire output on the newer sub woofer. It seems it takes a two wire input, and ports out either two wires (OEM setup on my 2000 Expo) or four wires (what I found on the Explorer sub woofer). So I think the OEM amp on my 2000, which originally drove two wires (one channel?) is driving the 2002 sub woofer with four wires (two channels?) just fine. In fact, my next step, if things had not sounded right, was to go back for the 2002 amplifier. But I think I am cool!

Im going to say that the amp is blown. You could get access to the sub and just hook up another speaker to see if the amp is still working.

And to find a replacement sub check out Crutchfield.com. Go to the outfit my car tab and fill in your vehicle info and it will show you what will fit. I have a 2000 Kicker CVR in mine.

I would also suggest that you get a new amp if your going to replace the sub because the factory amp will not have enough power to push an aftermarket sub. Dont get me wrong, you will get sound out of it but the bass will be muddy and distorted. Dont need anything over the top just a 100-300 watt amp. i can find Kicker amps in that range for 50-100 bucks all day where i live.

im gonna try to test the sub tomrrow to see if it works, if it dont i think im gonna just get a new sub and amp from ford, i dont know how to wire in that converter, i dont know what a set of rca is and ive learned finding an amp nearly the same as stock is not easy at all. i have such a headache from looking up all this stuff now and the work required to get to the amp is ridiculous i cant believe i need to tear up half the back of the truck, is there no easier way to get to that amp? im considering cutting the damn panel open with a dremel and some how patching it afterwards

For the price you will pay for the parts from ford you could replace the hu, sub, and amp.

and i cant find any good info with pics on how to go about tearing the back end down. i swear if i have to tear everything apart that amp is gonna be mounted outside of that fu*king panel when i replace it. Im so aggravated right now its unbelievable. what idiot decided it was a good idea to mount a sub and make it a living nightmare to access when it blows out

ok.... better question. if i go to a audio shop buy an aftermarket sub and amp can they just install it WITHOUT changing my head-unit, speakers, cd changer or any of that crapola? and Im just gonna put it out there now, Ive seen the thunder form enclosure its very nice and its also way to expensive for my budget so that one is out before it even had a chance. also im guessing i can expect to pay more then $200 right?

if you have everything now...i.e amp/sub/box/wiring...all you need is the signal converter...connect it to one of the wires for your door speakers or sub amp like i did and connect your rca's for the amp...see pics...if youre going for thunderform enclosure...i dont think theyre more than $250...JL also makes one...
