Last saturday I opened my Expedition Max 2018 sunroof in vent position, when I returned home and tried to close it, it didn't worked. Sunshade does work but the sunroof kept open in vent position. I tried the reset sequence and it didn't work. I brought the truck to the dealer on monday and after they did a check, they told me probably they need to replace the entire mechanism, which is very costly. The sunroof never gave me problems, only the traditional rattling noise, never heard a strange noise or cracking from any part.
Has anyone had this problem also, or I'm the only only one with such a bad luck?

Not sure if related, and I offer no fix. My 22 often refuses to close from the vent position. Sometimes I have to try up to a dozen times before it agrees to close. Never wants to replicate the issue in front of the techs, I think it has performance anxiety.

Does it move at all?

Check the brackets the glass mounts to. You'll have to pull the rubber bellows. There's a TSB for them, though not necessarily for this exact concern.

I hate those friggin' things! Its nothing but a money maker for the dealer and the maker. The last one that was opened was on a CTS V that had one, 30K miles and never opened. My kid came for a visit and wanted to go to Disney. He opened it and it leaked just enough to create an whistle at 75MPH. Never was able to get rid of the whistle. I finally traded the car. Shoulda kept that one too.

The sunroof doesn't move at all, only the sunshade opens till the end, and can close till the middle because the sunroof is opened in the vent position.

The service guy at the dealership, told me that they have made tests and that sometimes it opens and closes, and sometimes it refuses to close. So they say it can be fixed by replacing the entire sunroof but that is like a $4,000 option. So, I'm thinking about leaving the sunroof like it is and selling it warning the buyer the sunroof doesn't work.

Try moving it to a different spot the body flexes and can jam up the slide.

Hm… Probably there is a linkage bent or broken plastic pieces. The sunroof has to know where it is to engage the next step or some plastic piece is broken. Expensive? Two or three hundred bucks should fix that slider or lift kit. I think your dealer is taking you out for a ride, or doesn’t want to fix it.

They say there are no broken pieces. Apparently the sunroof has 2 power units, and sometimes they won't work. They took the power units from a Ford Explorer, installed them in the Expedition to make tests but the problem persists. Maybe it what you say and they offer the easy way out by suggesting to change the entire sunroof mechanism, which I don't plan to approve.

I definitely would at least get a second opinion. Maybe the motor has a dead spot? If it sometimes closes and opens no problem also could be a wiring problem. I wish the panorama roof would be an option not a forced add on thing that you have to take. Would make the truck 5K cheaper off the bet. I wish my SPP would have a solid roof.

Myself as well. Get one of these things on their roof I'd much rather have metal to slide on than broken glass that soon becomes a hole.

My 2024 did the same thing. It ended up being a software issue of all things. They did an update and has worked ever since.

Thanks for your help, I'll tell them to check this out and see if it works.

Have a nice day!
