Hello everyone. New guy today. I have an 08 Expedition with a 5.4 and just recently had Mobile1 0w-20 oil installed. I’m a little high on mileage, 112,000 so does anyone think this will be a problem?

I've spoken with "Engine guys" and Engineers all over the world on this exact subject and to a man, the educated say to keep using what the engine has always used. They say that each oil allows certain galling patterns and to change oils invites new, added galling but using the same oil maintains the conditions that the engine has operated in.

I'm just relating what people smarter than I have told me, first hand. It's your truck though, so do as you please!

Thanks Jeff. I’m not sure what galling is but I’ve come to realize I need to go back to the factory recommended 5w/20 next oil change. I just hope this current won’t be a problem.

I agree with Jeff, don't change horses in the middle of stream. The biggest issue that 2nd and 3rd gen Expedition owners run into day after day is malfunctioning cam phasers. The number 1 culprit is dirty oil, from owners that ignore the service intervals. That along with filters that don't supply oil on cold startup, and then the fun starts. I would never switch to a thinner oil, if anything due to increased clearance, I'd probably go up 1 weight. But on these engines, I'd stay the course. I run Mobil 1 5w30, and don't plan swapping to anything else. Use a motorcraft or other quality item, and switch back to the 5w20 or 5w30, whatever is in your owners manual. You might want to swap out earlier than intended. Even with full synthetic, their saying no more than 7,500 miles, 5-6 k is better due to dirt.

Thanks 1955moose. That’s a good idea. I’ll switch back sooner than later. I’m going from Nevada to North Carolina soon (about 2800 miles) maybe I’ll get it changed before I heard back.

Hey Big Brian. I got the 0w/20 on sale at Costco. Reno can have cold winters and it said it increased fuel mileage a little. So I gave it a try.

so you buy your own oil then take it to someone else to change it?

I live in Michigan, plenty cold here, I use the recommended Motorcraft 5w20

I would get that oil out of there I would not wait 2800 miles. If you are going to wait that long might as well just leave it in

doesn't make any sense to me

Big Brian. This is probably the last car I’ll own and I want to take car of it but I’m on a fixed income and cannot afford to have two oil changes back to back. Here in Reno it’s about $100.00. Which is why I bought my own oil this time. But not again.

Thanks everyone. Unless someone thinks I made a serious mistake that will cause damage to my engine, I’ll just get it changed as soon as possible.

I appreciate the input.

Your only 1 weight thinner on the low end. I wouldn't worry, Mobil 1 is a superior oil, hell Porsche puts it in their vehicles from day 1. Like you I'm getting on in years, and pick and choose my repairs. Don't get freaked out by others, its just comments. Keep an eye on the level over the next few months, and swap it out in the summer. You'll probably hit 5-6 k by July or so, you can worry then!

Thanks moose! I used a mechanic I trust to install it for me and he said about the same thing just now on the phone.

you dont have to do a complete oil change

a 5 qt jug of Motorcraft 5w20 is about $18 at Walmart. Leave the filter on

I would just suck it up and do it myself, crawl under there with a 5/8" wrench and a pan and drain it and be done with it

like other have said it will probably be fine with the oil you have

but you asked for advice, that is mine

Thanks Big Brian. I’ll consider that. I assume mixing the new 5 quarts 5w20 with 2 quarts 0w20 wouldn’t be a problem. It takes 7 quarts total.

You're fine!!! Don't go and waste your money dumping perfectly good oil. There isn't that much difference between 0W & 5W. Oil may be cheap but don't be wasteful

These guys are making it sound like youre gonna hurt your motor. Run it as long as you want and switch back to 5W-20 next oil change
