Howdy!

Ive been thinking for a while about switching my current 20'' Ford rims to the Ford 18'' Chrome rims that came standard on Expedition. I found a decent set on craigslist but the tire size is 255/70/r18 Goodyear Fortera TripleTred All Season. Will going from 275/55/R20 Pirelli's to the smaller size be really noticeable? Because mine is probably the heaviest model sold, will going to a smaller 255 affect the safety of the vehicle? I really want a smaller rim size for larger tire sidewalls and potentially better ride quality. I tried the search feature but could not find an appropriate thread.

Thanks!

I'll trade you for my Limited 17s. Still Chrome. And, I live close to you.

You would be fine switching. They are the same diameter they would be rated the same. Ive seen those "smaller" wheels on el's new. I would love to trade you mine.

the 255/70/r18 on the 07 08 and 09 expys and the 275/65/r18 on the newer expys are the same hight (both 18" sizes) and load range but a little shorter than the 20s. switching to the 18s from the 20s will work just fine. I went the other way 18s to 20s and I like the ride on the 20s better, firmer and handles better.

I went from 17s to 20s and think the ride quality is exponentially better. Larger sidewalls under E load ratings are way too squishy for me.

I did exactly what you are saying (although I have the "stock" 18 not the chrome clad 18s that were on the Limited). I have to drive off road on some construction sites and wanted more sidewall cushion.

What I noticed most from the change out of the chrome clad 20s was the highway tracking was not as good. I think that the extra width of the 20s helps there.

I've since put 275s on the 18s so that solved that problem!

Thank you for everyones's input! Sadly the guy I wanted the wheels from hasnt bothered to reply to me so I guess I'll keep the 20's for a while longer. For everyone that wants to trade, you do not want my rims. Trust me. haha. 2 of them have a 1.5 inch spot of chrome bit around the edge messed up where like a boulder had scraped part of them. So it doesnt look too hot. At a cursory glance, you couldnt tell. But when your washing them or inspecting them its painfully apparent. Thank you GaryH2 for your input! that was exactly what I was worried about. So if I ever get new ones, Ill spring for the larger footprint of the 275s.
