Hello forum,

I was doing a timing job found cyl 4 (passenger) intake roller was bad and damaged the lobe on the intake. I ordered new factory cam to replace. i noticed when i removed cam my head journals have journal bearings which means previous owner rebuilt the head. now with the cam im concerned with journal diameter cam journal diameter etc. So i took the readings and it is as follows

head journals with bearings

27.34 mm

head journals with out bearings

29.38 mm

old camshaft journals as i have not received new one yet

28.43 mm

what should i do as im off by 0.95 mm specs says .001 to .0003

Was the cam you took out a factory cam (the same camshaft you ordered)? Just read you haven’t received it yet, well you’ll have to compare the new camshaft to the one you removed. I was unaware they changed the journals style when heads were rebuilt. Sounds like you need to match up to the camshaft you removed and order that style unit again.

Welcome to the forum.

I don't have an answer but I suggest contacting the people you ordered the cam from and see if they have matching bearings for it.

Spec says 300 NANOmeters to 1 MICROmeter of tolerance? Pretty sure you misread that

You sure thats not 1 MIL (= 1/1000 of an inch or 0.025 mm) ????

PS old rule of thumb was around 1/1000th or 1 mil per inch or 1 micrometer per millimeter

Hey guys thanks for reply..

The book says mm using a digital micrometer to read the diameter.. my cams have 285k miles on them. I received the new ones and you can tell the difference in size and the wear on the old one. I purchased using the vin number from ford i know i received the right ones

ford ask for a min journal bore size of 28.65 mm mine are at 29.38. My guess previous owner had the heads refurbished reason why they put the bearings on there. new cams are they are within ford specs 28.60.

from reading the ford book i only have one option keeping the bearings on there temporarily until i get the money for a new head which are from $600-1000 a piece.
