I have a 2004 Expedition XLT 4X4 5.4L. Only has 33K original miles. I bought this vehicle new. When you are driving and turning left or right after a stop, Under acceleration ONLY you can hear what sounds like grinding from the front wheels. Almost as if the tires are being pushed across the pavement. If you give it gas and then left off and complete the turn, that sound stops. Weird. Dont see an issue with the tires cupping or anything like that. Just that noise that sounds aweful. And No....I dont drive with a "leadfoot".

Also, I noticed that when in 4 wheel high when backing up, the vehicle will hardly move. Again, this is on dry pavement. I know that you dont use 4 wheel drive mode on dry pavement. But about once every 3 months or so, I just engaage it to make sure everything is working. I dont drive it long distances (maybe a half a block in my neighborhood) to make sure all is well.

Have the front dif inspected. Sounds like it may be engaging and creating drag.

Just a guess but i bet it does have something to do with the front end of the 4wd system.

I know if i have mine in 4wd and make a tight turn the front diff will lock and i cant move until i straiten the wheel up a bit.
