Lots of downhill coasting!
3 additional mpg?? Tough to do in a 5600+pound expy. Keep tire pressure up..be light on the go pedal... use cruise control when possible. Keep speed lower. Expys not aerodynamic. Follow from a greater distance to reduce changes in velocity. Smooth and steady...
My initial question is what 'faults' in the 'system' will "SUCK" the gas down to only getting 3-4 MPG...
i.e... I still have something wrong with the car, but no codes?... (yet)
i.e... I can't hardly get 1 mile down the road without spending a dollar....
Was wondering if general emissions stuff would do this? (or fuel filter -- egr?, cats, vms, maf, iac...)

This kind of driver taken to the extreme drives me nut when I need to be somewhere...lol
Your only getting 3-4 mpg?? Wow. Did this happen suddenly or over time??
I would say no to fuel filter...would cause drivability or no start issues though...egr doubtfull, cats... if they are plugged up...yes they could but would think they would be cherry red after a drive due to the restriction. maf ... possibly but would think it would cause serious drivability issues also. .... there must be some other symptoms..
What was the condition of the fuel in the tank.....If it sat for long enough you could have bad fuel.

a stuck injector
I think I've been through more gas in the last 3 weeks than I did in 3 months with the previous rig...
My original idea was getting a car I wouldn't have a stinking $580.00 payment! -- but what I didn't have in mind is paying the $580.00 anyway (in gas)
As for the 'other symptoms'... I'm still working on it... I have no history with this car (see my garage)

Drives good!... Engine performance "today" is the best it's been (for me) -- still gets a bit 'fluttery' under load around 2k rpm (like it's late to shift & starts gagging on gas) And when it does shift... Seems pretty hard... Sometimes really slams in.
Yesterday... P0308, P0303, P0300... Last nights test drive after going for the P0303 fix (because it was easiest)... I was left with only P0308...
This morning I moved plug / pack to the 7 hole... Cleared code & test drove... I got P0307.. So... I pulled the 'new' sparkplug for inspection (fine)... And replaced coil with a spare.. And test drove...
All was good for about 15 minutes & now I pull P0302 -- But I'm calling BS on that being plug or coil... So I cleared it. (tomorrow it will be another hole I'd bet)
I'm thinking my injectors have glue in them...
(I swear the guy that had the rig before me dumped sugar in the tank before the repoman drove it off...)

Try using a different gas station.I always used Shell gas,one time I filled up at a Citgo station.Thought I had a small leak or someone stealing it.85 miles on a half tank when its usually 115 to 120 miles.

always happens when i feel up with arco gas. their slogan is .10 cheaper than everyone else. what they dont say is 15% less gas mileage than everyone else.

what everyone else ahs said... or drive a 4cyl car and park the expo.... well thats what I am doing...lol sucks but cant afford to drive expy every day
those missfire codes are not bogus.... sounds like you need 8 coil packs.
trust me the fuel savings will pay for the coils.
change all eight plugs and coils. clean the MAF, pull it out of the airbox and clean all of the build up of of the resistors with a good maf clean spray. check all the rubber vacuum hoses for leaks. ford are notorious for rotten/splitting vacuum hoses. the computer will see the leak as a lean condition and drop more fuel in engine to compensate. make sure you have a clean air filter.
one of the things i do is run a couple of gallons of e85 in half a tank once a month. this will keep the inside of the fuel system really clean and is much cheaper than injector cleaning treatments. a warning about this though. if you have a really nasty fuel system it will run like crap until you burn all the varnish off that the e85 broke loose. and you should replace your fuel filter at that point.
also you will see a measureable increase by running good gasoline. this does not mean high octane, because our trucks don't need it. it means running shell gasoline. and always fill up at same staion, once you find one, that cosistently has good gas.
don't ever buy gas when you see a tanker filling tanks, as the fuel sits the water seperates and you get good fuel but when the tanker dumps fuel in is mixes alll the nastyness up and your mileage will suffer.
