I got my sticker out because I am thoroughly confused. It does say I have a Class IV Trailer Tow Package, what that means, who knows.

One VIN tow search says 9300, one says 6000.

Are you saying you have the heavy duty tow package?

Ok everyone....

First, thank you all so much for your help.

One VIN tow search says 9300, one says 6000. Another says both.

Unfortunately, it doesn't. That sticker is for the hitch itself and all Expeditions get the same hitch. Also unfortunately, Ford includes something called a "trailer towing package" on all Expeditions, which includes the hitch, associated wiring, etc. To get a towing capacity over 6000lbs, you have to get the "Heavy Duty Trailer Towing" package. That gets a bigger radiator, a stouter rear axle, a trailer brake controller and different gears in the rear axle. Only the trailer brake controller can be added to standard Expedition.

If you don't have a trailer brake controller on the dash then you do not have the heavy duty tow package. That's an easy way to spot if you have the heavy duty tow or not.

In the Grey Wolf line of trailers I would not go over the 26djse, however it looks like you have the short wheelbase and as mentioned above av shorter trailer would be a better option. Otherwise you will be looking at the tail wagging the dog.

The sticker posted already determined that it is the standard tow package that the OP has and not the heavy duty tow package. Axle (gear) code on that sticker denotes it as standard tow package. 6000 lbs max.

I would not use this to determine unless you are the original owner of the truck. I added the integrated brake controller to mine and I do not have the HD tow. A future owner of the truck using this to determine such would incorrectly think they had the HD tow.

In that case, the pro trailer backup knob would be a better indicator. 369315DD-1CC6-4FBE-B322-AD716CF1B198.jpeg

Since the F150 guys have figured out how to add the pro trailer if one was feeling adventurous I would think that it could be done to the Expedition.

Why not just use the sticker in the door?

Axle code 10 = Always standard tow package.

Axle code 3L = Probably HD tow, but could be FX4 without it. However, you would be 90% on your way to the pieces that really matter for HD tow since you would have the 3.73 gear ratio.

In the OPs case sticker don't lie and axle code 10 is 3.15 gear ratio standard tow 6000lbs.

The knob was the easiest way for me to look at online vehicles for sale, or locked vehicles on the dealers lots after hours. Its just quick and easy to look quick.

Why is this a debate? The OP vehicle code shows a 3:15 rear end all Expeditions with that axle are not heavy tow package equipped. Regardless of whats on the dash or bolted to the bumper its a 6000lb max rated SUV.

Ford was really inconsistent in the dash layout and not super obvious as to which Expeditions had the heavy tow pack 3:73 rear end. I found many Dealers were by design not helpful given lots of people bought Expeditions thinking they were getting a heavy tow pack when they weren’t.

Which case given the 6000lb max tow capacity you want to look at trailers in the 3000-4500lb dry weight. The 4500lb dry weight will put you at max or over max if your hauling 2+ people and full tanks.

Which means that realistically the trailers that fall into your tow vehicle capability are the 21-24ft trailers or smaller.

This is what I was getting at, if there is not brake controller, or back up assist, you don't have the HD tow. Just another quick way to make an assessment. I did a lot of internet searching too and it was easy to know if it was worth going to look at.
