My 2001 Expedition 136600 miles began a slight clunking noise when braking hard. At first it seemed to be coming from the left front tire maybe a control arm bushing. But that is not the case. We now know It's the transmission but not exactly sure where to begin.

Symptoms: All with OD engaged
Drives fine in 1st gear
Drives fine in 2nd gear
3rd gear it will auto downshift to first at almost any speed and of course instantly slows down (while high rpm's remain higher) Obviously this is not good. Can't drive it on the freeway and anything of above 25 or 30 could cause major damage.

Have not driven with OD off yet will do so and post results.

I am guessing it could be solenoid or an some sort of Electronic Control Module but not familial with the transmission and setup.

Any suggestion are greatly appreciated.
