Tranny Problem/Recomendation

Hey fellas I was wondering if anyone has had tranny issues and any suggestions on my problem...I have an 05' LTD with approx. 76k miles and I recently lost my OverDrive (slips as if in neutral), no check engine light, and no blinking OD light. Two ford dealers and one tranny shop told me the OD band is gone and im looking between $1,200 to $2,200 to rebuild it. Do I rebuild or replace?

Well rebuild will save you money, or at least should over buying a new transmission. Most new transmissions will come with a mileage warranty however. A 2005 with a dead transmission at 76k miles?? That sounds really bad...

in my case (negative spending limits) I'd try to find a salvaged transmission. Most salvage yards will give you a short warranty of a month to 6 months. In my opinion, it's either going to work fine and last another 100K miles like normal, or be completely dead right out of the box. In other words the warranty is basically good enough to make sure you didn't get a lemon.

As long as you don't tow in overdrive........ and have a decent tranny cooler...and change fluids with good quality fluids, it should last a long time.

I had a trans shop rebuild the one in my explorer at 140,000 miles. Then at 145,000 miles it broke, they repaired it, then at 148,000 miles the band broke.... it was repaired again and is fine for 40,000 miles so far unless I just jinxed myself. Looking back I'd rather have gotten an untouched factory tranny out of a wreck with low mileage.

I'd sure like to know why it went out first, that is way too early for normal use. I think I'd prefer a low mileage used "untouched" tranny to a rebuilt one. I haven't seen too many rebuilt auto trans last that long.

Same idea different direction...

How many different trans will fit the expd? I have a 98 xlt 2wd and replaced the trans early '08. It's starting to shudder again going in and out of d and od. I have worked on older (60's-80's) bow ties and remember you could take 2 or 3 trans and they would interchange. Just thought I'd throw it out there.
