I recently bought a 98 expedition XLT 5.4
had it about a month and drove it back to NC from north jersey
worked fine the whole way back then suddenly one day was hesitant at stoplights to accelerate. but once started going went fine well finally the other day saw some smoke under hood pulled off to see what was going on (trans fluid checked out 3 times ) and it dumped all of the Tran fluid was wondering my thoughts a bad pump or Tran planning on replacing whole Tran any advice and does anyone know how hard this is to change. any help would be much appreciated

Depends on where it dumped the fluid from. There are many "could be's" concerning what failed, trans cooling line, torque converter seal etc.
Transmissions aren't hard to change as long as you have a good level floor, trans jack and decent tools plus a good manual. Air tools help with the speed aspect.
What are your mechanical abilities and available tools?

+1 on finding the source of your leak as Stamp described above.

How many miles? Do you know if/when the trans was last serviced? Could be something very minor-hopefully so.

Let us know what you find.
