Transfer Case
Greetings-New guy with several transfer case questions.

#1.) What type of transfer case is in a 2000 Ford Expedition XLT Sport with 5.4L Engine with about 76,000 miles gently driven by my loving wife? Options are 4AWD, 4HI, & 4l. She has never switched the vichle into 4H or 4L but magically it is stuck in 4H.

#2.) I can't afford a new transfer case or even a remanufactured transfer case. Is there any way I can manually disconnect 4H and 4L until I can afford to replace? If this is even possible what components could I do further damge to? Front or Rear Differential, etc.....?

#3.) Anyone selling a used transfer case for this vehicle?

#4.) If I do change the transfer case can I cange it to 2wd, A4WD, 4H & 4L? Would this improve my gas milage any? Currently on a good day of highway driving is 14 MPG is the best we can get.

Any help would be great.

Thanks!

I take the dash light says you're in 4HI?

I certainly wouldn't want to drive it too far on dry roads like that, the corners can really make the front end bind up.

Your transfer case is actuauted by a switch on the dash that in turn tells a servo motor to shift the transfer case.

It is my guess that one of those is bad and probably nothing internal in the Xfer case is bad.

Pull the dash switch first and clean it. You could probably just replace it. It is known to fail on those models.

Second choice would be to test the shift solenoid on the tranfer case.

You'll need a manual to get the correct values for the test. I do not have them for that year.

hmmm...me too

I have an 05 Expy...similar problem. Works okay in 2wd, can switch to 4AWD, and that works. When switching to 4H or 4L I get nothing. The AWD part does engage the front wheels when it has detected slippage from rear, so I'm thinkin the H & L must be on a different circut. When attempting to go into 4L, I get the message on the message center telling me to put it in neutral and step on tha brake...yeah right okay. nothing. Is it possible the motor responsible for shifting it is messed up or do I start with checking the connection? Fuse looked good.

Very possible for the motor to be bad the shift motor usually have a sliding contact plate for feedback that the transfer case is in the selected position. Try taking the motor off and cleaning the contact plates. If it works it is a free repair. Maybe seal it up with a little silicone.
