Anyone have any recommendation for one to use on the 2018 Expedition?

I do not have the HD tow package and would like to add something to keep the temps down during towing.

Last time I towed end of the season last year, ambient temps were high and was towing up a dirt road with about 7k LBS trailer. Speeds were very slow. The 'digital' trans temp gauge showed temps of over 250deg, but the 'analog' gauge on the dash never went about 1/2 way (so no where near the red).

Anyone else seen this discrepancy?

I have the tow package (for what its worth).

In my experience, 250deg+ is approaching too hot.

The newer analog gauges are just dummy gauges. They stay in the middle until something excessive happens. This way the average person knows everything is "ok". Then if there is an issue the gauge goes to the extreme so they know there's a problem. I would trust the digital gauge and not the needle!

I have a 2018 max no tow package and pulled a 7klb 32' travel trailer up to the smokey mountains in 91F weather and I did some experimenting.
-normal driving: 205-215F
-towing: 215-223F
-tail of the dragon in sport mode: 228F

The dummy gauge hits "middle" at 150F and stays there until 225F. At 226F it begins to tick up. I never got over 230F (stopped after hard abusive corner carving) so I don't know when the dummy gauge starts saying danger.

Just remember the 10R80 uses a heat exchanger to cool the oil. The tow package give you a larger radiator to help with the heat exchange. The Raptor has an air to oil cooler and I have been trying to find out if it can be retro fitted to the Expy. I haven’t had the time to go to the dealership and look up the parts.

Are you going to ditch the louvers up front and mount a cooler? Would you ever upgrade the FMIC?

So who's first? Haha...

This is the one I would get

If all the plumbing is external of the transmission I will do it as we tow our boat to Mead in hot weather. The transmission and motor get pretty warm. I think this would help.

Wow, I like that setup...
Just will have to get some longer tubing. Would you bypass the factory cooler or put this after it?

I have not seen the Raptor drawings but what I have been told about the system from the people that make the thermostat bypass for the Raptor. Is the Raptor has both systems. The 10R80 runs more efficiently at temp. Which we all know is pretty high. The Trans is warmed up by the heat exchanger by the radiator when cold. When everything is at operating temperatures it goes the other direction. The Raptor has an external cooler with a thermostat. Once the transmission temp hits a certain temp it opens up to allow the cooler to flow oil. There is a kit for the Raptor that totally gets rid of the heat exchanger and only relies on the air to oil cooler in the grill. I just need to look at the parts list and compare the two. But I can’t find anything on the web. Need to hit the dealer.

I must be missing something. What is the difference, in the chart above, between (Std.) and "X"?

STD means included on every Expedition. X is that item is included in the option package. I.E. every Expedition gets the hitch, harness, tow/haul mode, and trailer sway control. The trailer towing package adds the other stuff.

nope, that doesn't follow its own rules.
if that were the case, then why the X in the Std. Expedition column? I think they may have meant what you said, but they were at least inconsistent about the application.
Makes me wonder about what else they might have F'd up.

I think all they are trying to say is that it is the same as the standard. For example the hitch receiver is not upgraded for the 536 package.

It is kinda of confusing. But if you price out anything Ford they always ad on top of the previous options. The limited has all the options standard on the XLT plus this. The Platinum has all the limited options standard plus this.

How are you towing a 7K# trailer. Isnt the Expy rated for 6000# max without HD towing?
