My 2019 Expedition has 73,000 miles on it. In the last month when trying to speed up to merge onto expressway my vehicle is downshifting. Once I get to about 65 it drops down into such a low gear that my tires squealed. The wrench will pop up and it says to see service manual and then the wrench goes away and I am able to continue on the expressway. When the vehicle downshifts it does not allow me to adjust my speed or have any control over the gas petal. It's almost as if everything was freezing up and just sitting in one gear not allowing me to do anything. This has happened three times in the past month. I have read that older models were doing this same thing. Anyone else have issues with this in the 2019 or newer and what did you find to be the fix?

Mine totally slips out of gear. Shows 1 on the dash gear tree and redlines. Haven’t had a chance to take it in yet but get the same wrench and then it goes away. Can’t find any codes. 2018 Platinum 4x4 with HD package @ 85,000 miles but it’s been doing it since 70,000.

I’ve been able to replicate it a few times as well in case they give me any lip at the dealership.

40 mph in 10th gear and punch it. Or 65 mph in 10th gear and punch it.

Almost got me ran over by an 18 wheeler once getting onto the highway.

Have a couple years and lots of miles left on the extended warranty so hopefully can get a new transmission eventually.

My 2015 did this, would stay in first gear, wrench light came on. It goes into limp mode so you have no control of speed. Found out to be the oss (output speed sensor) in the transmission.$1100 for repair. Vehicle was in the shop for 3 months waiting on parts. At the time ford had over 19000 sensors on back order. Went with aftermarket part with same warranty as ford part. Could not wait 6 months or longer waiting on a part. So people or dealer call the part the lead frame inside the transmission. No help from Ford. Called ntsb put in complaint trying to get a recall. Nothing yet. Good luck

Same for 65mph-ish in 10 and punch it for me x1 so far. Has made me change my driving habits as I almost got rear ended (and felt like a total dick) when it happened. No codes, little wrench with "see manual" for a few moments and then condition goes away/able to drive normally again. I've tried to make it happen again, but, have not been able to.

Same sentiments on the extended warranty for me...

Have you tried going into sports mode or manual mode? Try manual shifting it and see if it will shift through the gears fine. might be low on fluid or could be a valve body issue.

Up to this point I think that there is no hard part failure (since the transmission works normally afterwards). My understanding is that this is due to hydraulic leak(s) within the valve body. Not enough pressure to engage a certain clutch.

You may be able to get away with valve body replacement or repair.
